  1. Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives Continuing Need For FAA Engine Nacelle Fire Simulator By: Conrad Roseburg BCA Enabling Technology - Propulsion / Fuels - ATF

  2. Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives Background: • FAA NW / Boeing informal meeting October 02, 2003. • Based upon the discussions it was concluded that industry should not become complacent on having the FAA Engine Nacelle Fire Simulator. Notes: **From FAA NW / Boeing meeting

  3. Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives Industry Should Not Become Complacent** • FAA Tech Center Plans To Evaluate / Test HFC-125 and CF3I. • FAA Have Requested That Industry Propose Additional Agents That They May Consider Using. • Concern Is That Once The Scheduled Testing Has Been Completed The FAA Funding For The Engine Nacelle Simulator May Possibly Not Continue. Notes: **From FAA NW / Boeing meeting

  4. Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives Industry Should Not Become Complacent** • If Funding Stops For The Simulator Could It Possibly Be Dismantled??? Notes: **From FAA NW / Boeing meeting

  5. Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives • Continued Need For FAA Engine Nacelle Fire Simulator • There is considerable effort being extended in the • search for “Halon Alternatives”. • Army – helicopters – 5 agents being evaluated. • NIST –Next Generation Program (NGP) • NIST focusing on agents applicable to engine • nacelles. • NGP effort is to demonstrate the performance • of alternative agents by end of 2005.

  6. Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives • Continued Need For FAA Engine Nacelle Fire Simulator • V-22 evaluating fire extinguishing agents. • Alternate Agent Working Group (AAWG) • research for “Halon Alternatives” including • agent 707. • Others including cargo groups are evaluating • agents.

  7. AGENTS UNDER SNAP INTERNAL REVIEW _________________________________________________ • NOVEC 1230- C6 Perfluoroketone- (3M) C2F5C(O)CF(CF3)2 - Streaming (nonresidential) & Flooding • H Galden Hydrofluoropolyethers- (Ausimont) Mixture of polymeric and oligomeric hydrofluoropolyethers- streaming -(nonresidential) • HFC-227-BC: FM200 with NaHCO3- (Kidde Dual Spectrum – for army)- total flooding- interim armored vehicles-separate cylinders- come out together • Goodrich 244- powdered aerosol-pyrotechnically generated- contains bromide salt • EPA anticipates publishing final decisions in early 2003

  8. Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives • Continued Need For FAA Engine Nacelle Fire Simulator* • Would expect that over the next two to three years • that there will be two or more additional viable • candidates for FAA Engine Nacelle Fire Simulator • Tests. • Boeing Sees A Continuing Need For The FAA • Engine Nacelle Fire Simulator.

  9. Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives • Recommendation: • “Boeing recommends to the FAA Tech Center that • they continue to support and fund the FAA Engine • Nacelle Fire Simulator for several years” (2005 and • beyond).

  10. Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives Appendix Plan - Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives

  11. Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives Plan - Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives • Part I – The Situation** • Part II – Halon Alternatives • Part III – FAA Simulator Fire Tests • Part IV – Halon Simulant Certification Test • Part V – Preliminary Design • Part VI – Airplane Certification-New Agent Notes: **Halon Alternatives – Background

  12. Engine Nacelle Halon Alternatives Plan: Part III – Simulator Fire Tests Minimum Performance Standard • Draft (as of 12/12/2001) • Defines Fire Simulation Requirements • Update 6/2004** - Release 12/2004** FAA Engine Fire Simulator • Define Reference Fire Conditions With Halon (4 to 6) • Equivalence, demonstration, severe, and/or reference fires • Define Characteristics Of Alternate Extinguishing Agent • Define Concentration and Time Required For Alternate Extinguishing Agents to Extinguish Reference Fires • Review and Assess Viability for / in Aircraft Installation Notes: **CMR Estimate 9/30/03
