  1. Chapter 2, Section 3Mineral Resources Wednesday, November 4, 2009 Pages 62 -- 66

  2. Objectives • Describe how minerals are used. • List the three types of mines. • Explain how ores are processed to obtain metals.

  3. Vocabulary Words • Gemstone • Ore • Smelting • Alloy

  4. Uses of Minerals • Minerals are the source of metals, gemstones, and other materials used to make many products.

  5. Gemstones • Gemstones are hard, colorful minerals. • Gemstones have a brilliant or glassy luster. • Gemstones are valued for their color. • Gemstones are called gems once they are cut and polished. • Gemstones are used mainly for jewelry and decoration.

  6. Metals • Minerals are sources of metals such as aluminum, iron, copper, or silver. • Metals are used to make tools and machinery. • Metals all begin as minerals inside Earth’s crust.

  7. Other Uses of Mineral • Talc -- baby powder • Quartz -- glass; timepieces • Calcite -- optical equipment. • Kaolin -- china • Gypsum -- cement • Corundum -- polishing and cleaning products

  8. Ores • An ore is a rock that contains a metal or economically useful mineral. • Most metals do not occur in pure form. Gold ore

  9. Prospecting • People who look for an ore deposit are called prospectors. • They observe the land surfaces. • They examine surrounding plants. • They look at results of sound waves.

  10. Mining • There are three types of mine: • Strip mines • Open pit mines • Shaft mines

  11. Strip Mining • Earthmoving equipment scrapes away soil to expose ores.

  12. Open Pit Mining • Giant earthmoving equipment is used to dig a tremendous pit. • Pits can extend 100’s of meters below the surface.

  13. Shaft Mines • Shaft mines have a network of tunnels. • They follow veins of the ore.

  14. Smelting • Smelting is the process where ore is melted to separate the useful metal from other elements that ore contains. • Involves mixing an ore with other substances and then heating the mixture to a very high temperature. • The heat causes the metal to separate from the oxygen with which it is combined. • After smelting, an addition process is added to remove impurities.

  15. Homework • Workbook Section 2.3 due 11/6 • Vocabulary quiz 2.3 only on 11/6 • CHAPTER 2 TEST RESCHEDULED -- NEW DATE: 11/11.
