  3. Adding New Acquisitions to the Collection • The Libraries add 127,000+ volumes to the collection annually* *2009 ARL statistics • These do not include: • Volumes added to the Health Sciences, Law and regional library collections • Microforms • Electronic resources

  4. Consolidating Collections Music & Dance Library (MUS) materials being moved to the Science & Engineering Library (SEL) by Summer 2011 because of upcoming Sullivant Hall renovation

  5. Consolidating Collections Collections and services offered by MUS and SEL must be consolidated into existing SEL space

  6. Storage SpaceIssues • Space needed for new additions to the collections • Book Depository (STX) storage facility is at capacity • No additional storage likely to become available in the foreseeable future

  7. Physical Solutions • Withdraw items from MUS, SEL and STX, applying the Libraries “Print Retention and Withdrawal” policy • Transfer items from MUS and SEL to STX, as volumes currently at STX are withdrawn

The JSTOR Project • Founded in 1995, JSTOR is a not-for-profit service that helps scholars, researchers, and students discover, use, and build upon a wide range of content in a digital archive of over 1,000 academic journals and other scholarly content. • JSTOR’s development was supported by the Mellon Foundation.

About JSTOR • Purpose: A service for libraries to outsource storage of print journals • Goal: Archives multiple paper copies • Harvard and California Digital Library have print copies archived for preservation purposes • CRL (Center for Research Libraries) in Chicago) is also a print back-up site : OSU journal discards are sent to fill in CRL gaps )

  10. JSTOR and the OSU Libraries • OSU Libraries donated $30,000 in 1997 to help develop JSTOR. • OSU Libraries purchased nine JSTOR collections at a cost of $116,575. • OSU pays JSTOR $58,000 annually for online access and outsourced archiving services.

  11. JSTOR and the OSU Libraries • OSUL contributes withdrawn volumes, if needed by CRL, for redundant print archiving or future borrowing if a print copy is again required • OhioLINK libraries are discussing retaining a minimum of two print copies of JSTOR titles for OhioLINK loans

JSTOR Math Titles We have online access via JSTOR, but we may never have subscribed to all 65 math journals in print: American Journal of Mathematics 1878-2004  American Mathematical Monthly 1894-2006 Annalesd'Économie et de Statistique 1986-2008 Annales de l'inséé 1970-1985 Cahiers du Séminaired'Économétrie 1951-1985 The Annals of Mathematics 1884-2004 The Analyst 1874-1883 The Bulletin of Symbolic Logic 1995-2010 The College Mathematics Journal 1984-2006 The Two-Year College Mathematics Journal 1970-1983 Econometrica 1933-2007 Educational Studies in Mathematics 1968-2006

  13. Next Steps • Subject librarians will be notified by email when wiki is live and JSTOR titles are posted • Procedure: All JSTOR titles will be withdrawn to provide needed space – unless they fit criteria to be retained • 1st priority will be titles in STX, SEL, MUS

  14. Next Steps • All staff/students managing withdrawals and transfers will be re-trained on JSTOR criteria using updated training materials • Withdrawn volumes on OSU regional campus libraries’ wiki “pick list” and CRL wish list will be shipped to them

  15. Print Volumes will be retained for certain categories • High graphic content (i.e. photos, art work) • Continuing high circulation of print volumes
