  2. Mythology is a collection of myths, especially those belonging to a particular religious or cultural tradition. A myth is a traditional story, usually concerning some superhuman being or unlikely event, that are widely believed to be true. Myths were attempts to explain natural phenomena, such as solar and lunar eclipses, the seasons, or weather. What is Mythology?

  3. Mythology Around the World • Each major culture around the world has had some sort of mythology: • Norse (Thor, Odin) • Arthurian Legend • Egyptian (Ra, Osiris, Seth) • African (Anansi) • Indian (Shiva, Krishna) • Every Native American Culture • And many more examples Indian/Hindu God Shiva

Why Study Mythology • Ancient and modern mythologies still shape our world. • Different myths and characters are often alluded to today in books, movies, music, etc. • Many of our English words also come from these myths. The Spirit (2008) Plot includes both the Golden Fleece and the Blood of Hercules.

  6. It’s all Greek to Me • Greco-roman mythology is the best known in Western Culture (Europe and United States). • Its prominence is due to the historical influences the Greeks and Roman Empire have had on the development of Europe. • It has influenced our art, language, and even companies. Zeus

  10. Modern Mythology • Mythology still exists in modern culture. • Most modern mythology is not considered to be true, but it still fulfills needs of our culture. • Modern mythology also comes in new formats: • Movie • Video Games • TV • Comic Books
