  1. LATEX and Its Friends Spring 2001 Professor R. Schumacher

  2. History • TeX or Plain TeX • a digital typesetting language • created by Donald Knuth • at Stanford • in the 1970s • LaTeX is a large set of macros built on top of TeX,

  3. History • LaTeX • Now called LaTeX 2.09 • created by Leslie Lamport • at Digital Equipment Corporation • in the mid-1980s

  4. History • LaTeX 2e • current recent version • outgrowth of the LaTeX3 project • led by Frank Mittelbach. • LaTeX3 • The next version (3-5 years out) • Upward compatible for documents

  5. History • AMS-LaTeX, • a set of LaTeX enhancements • by the American Mathematical Society • provides enhanced mathematical typesetting • three new LaTeX 2e document classes • scores of new math symbols • four new math alphabets. • Articles written with AMS-LaTeX are of the same high quality as those found in the journals of the AMS.

  6. Motivation • “Most” math, physics, and computer science journals accept (and often require) article submission in LaTeX (or a variant) • Many software packages use LaTeX constructs for internal mathematical notation. • For the price, this system is the most cost effective way to get professional, publication quality mathematical typesetting.

  7. Big Picture on How it Works Step 1: Use any ASCII editor to compose the source document. (text and commands in *.tex) Step 2: Use the LaTeX compiler to create the device independent file (*.dvi) Step 3: Use the correct ‘viewer’ to display on monitor or to print. Repeat this cycle until you are satisfied with the document.

  8. Advantages Much nicer mathematics Portability between systems Cost to use is minimal Disadvantages Have to learn a new paradigm for writing Have to have the LaTeX system installed on any needed computer Requires about 300 Mb for a full installation. Advantages and Disadvantages

  9. Demonstration of System. • Math Example • Text Example • Larger Document • Live Demonstration • MikTeX and Friends is installed on this system • Link between Maple and LaTeX

  10. Installation Options • On CedarNet Computers • (Map T Drive): Installation Directions • On Other Windows 95/98/NT/ME systems • (Map T Drive): Installation Directions • On Other Operating Systems • Go to CTAN and download from systems

  11. How do I learn it? • This is a skill which must be learned • Only learned by doing • YOU MUST USE IT TO LEARN IT • Read the documentation • Ask questions • Use it, Use it, Use it. • Follow the UseNet Newsgroup comp.text.tex

  12. Useful Links • http://www.tug.org TeX Users Group • Excellent starting place • http://www.ctan.org/search/ CTAN Archive • Location of ‘Most’ of the freeware for TeX/LaTeX Map the T:Drive then • Online Latex ManualFree (but short) Intro LaTeX manual. • Online TeX ManualFree Intro TeX manual (out of date on how Cedarnet is installed) • An On-Line LaTeX Overview • Other Programs Using TeX/LaTeX
