Inspiration • Thanks to John Doyle • European Commission's sustainable development policy co-ordinator for the EU Information Society • Inspiration • Presented to 2008 BASDA AGM • Highlighted the need to address Green • Identified the need for the software industry to engage • Sparked the work that has been undertaken to establish the Green Charter and Support the implementation issues by addressing standards.

BASDA Green XML • Objective - to define a data structure that supports the full scope of ‘green’ information • Developed in consultation with expert groups over the past 2 years • XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a set of rules for encoding documents electronically. • Extension of BASDA XML standard – already used widely for data exchange between business system • Supports (today): • Carbon footprints and offsets • Embedded/virtual water • eco-labels and certifications

  14. BASDA XML - 1999 • History- BASDA XML was one of the first to market in 1999 • BASDA Green and BASDA Utilities XML have a 2 year lead on any other standard • Supports new Greenhouse Gas Protocol for Product and Supply Chain Carbon footprints that were only released last month
