  1. The new ABS Statistical Geography – the ASGS

  2. ABS has a new geography • The Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) replaces the former ASGC. • CDs, SLAs, SSDs and SDs have been replaced by Statistical Area Level 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s. Also GCCSAs. LGAs are retained. • Census/Buildings Approvals are already ASGS enabled - other ABS collections transferring by 2013.

  3. What are some of the new regions? • Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1s): 54,804 in number, average population size = 400 people. Reflect suburbs/localities. • SA2s: 2,214, average population = 10,000 (ranging from 3,000-25,000) people. Optimal for household data. • SA3s: 351, with 30,000-130,000 people. • SA4s: 106, with100,000-500,000 people. Optimal for JTW/LF data.

  4. Why change geographies? • Move towards a more functional classification - based on where people come to access services. • Stability and data continuity – no need to review/change regions yearly. • More consistency in population size across regions. • To establish a framework that integrates meta data, spatial boundaries and regional hierarchies.

  5. Median monthly mortgage payments – Tasmania (2011 Census)

  6. SLA – median monthly mortgage payments (2011)

  7. SA2 – median monthly mortgage payments (2011)

  8. Building approvals – new houses - July-Dec 2011 (SLAs) Armadale WA

  9. Building approvals – new houses – July-Dec 2011(SA2s) Armadale WA

  10. Optimising your use of ASGS data • select “Statistical Geography” on the ABS website and explore further. • don’t be misled by similar sounding names across ASGC/ASGS regions - they may not necessarily be the same. • compare the ASGC/ASGS maps to see where the boundary changes have really occurred.
