How it began • January 1996 - research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, 2 Stanford students going for their PhD - originally called BackRub • Normal search engines - ranked results by counting how many times the search terms appeared on the page What google did – analyzed the relationships between websites (called PageRank) • Eventually, they changed the name to Google – a misspelling of googol, 1*10100, signifying the return of large quantities of info.

  3. How it began • Started on Stanford's website at google.stanford.edu • Domain registered 9/15/1997 • Company incorporated 9/4/98 • Based in garage in Menlo Park, California

  4. Some facts • Google is now the world’s largest media corporation • It’s 537 dollar stock price is bigger then Disney, GM, and McDonald’s combined

  5. Timeline • February 99 – Google opens Palo Alto offices – they outgrew garage • August 99 – they move to new Mountain View offices - googleplex • May 9 2000 – 10 languages • June 26 2000 – 1 billion pages! • August 1 2001 - First international office • May 1, 2002 – Partnership with AOL
