  3. Precambrian

  4. Precambrian Events 4.6 billion years ago until 570 million years ago • The Canadian Shield formed. • Early life such as bacteria and simple multicelled organisms evolve. • Atmosphere becomes less hostile.

  5. Paleozoic 570 mya to 250 mya • Europe and N. America collide creating the Appalachian Mtn chain along the East Coast of Canada. • The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands are uplifted from the ocean bottom. • Age of Fish. • Amphibians, reptiles and insects evolve on land. • The supercontinent of Pangaea forms

  6. Life in the Paleozoic

  7. Mesozoic Era 250 mya until 70 mya • A subcontinent collides with the west coast of N. America creating the Western Cordillera mtn chain. • The vast inland sea of N. America eventually drains leaving the vast flat plains. • Dinosaurs evolve and dominate the land. • Flying reptiles evolve. • Small mammals evolve. • Pangaea breaks up into Gondwanaland and Laurasia.

  8. Life of the Mesozoic

  9. Cenozoic Era • Several glaciations cover the Northern Hemisphere and resculpt the land. • The Great Lakes are scoured out by the glaciers. • Mammals grow in size and variety. • Humans evolve near the end of the era.
