  1. To Kill a MockingbirdChapter 22 Dr. Good Arleta High School English 10

  2. Jem’s Reaction • “It was Jem’s turn to cry. His face was streaked with angry tears…’It ain’t right,’ he muttered, all the way to the corner of the square where we found Atticus waiting.” (284) • THINK/PAIR/SHARE: Why is it significant that the author chooses the word “cheerful” to describe the crowd outside the courtroom?

  3. Scout’s Reaction • Scout, as the narrator, serves as our eyes and ears in this chapter – she reports the reactions of others to us. She does not seem to have a strong reaction to the outcome of the trial.

  4. Dill’s Reaction • Dill did all his crying the previous day. Now he is angry, especially at his Aunt Rachel, who said “if a man like Atticus Finch wants to butt his head against a stone wall, it’s his head.” (286) • THINK/PAIR/SHARE: What do you think Aunt Rachel means by this statement?

  5. Aunt Alexandra • “I’m sorry, Brother,” she murmured. • Why is she being affectionate to Atticus here? • What does Atticus mean when he says “It’s (the trial) just as much Maycomb County as missionary teas.”? (285)

  6. The African-American Community Reacts • Tom Robinson’s father sends Atticus a chicken • Estelle from the hotel sent a batch of rolls • Almost every member of the community has sent food to the home – WHY?

  7. Miss Maudie and Jem • “We’re so rarely called on to be Christians, but when we are, we’ve got men like Atticus to go for us.” (288) • Jem: Who helped Tom? • “His colored friends for one thing, and people like us. People like Judge Taylor. People like Mr. Heck Tate…did it ever strike you, Jem, that Judge Taylor naming Atticus to defend that boy was no accident?...I thought, Atticus Finch won’t win, he can’t win, but he’s the only man in these parts who can keep a jury out so long in a case like that. And I thought to myself, well, we’re making a step – it’s just a baby step, but it’s a step.” (289)
