  1. When, What & How To Feed A Proper Diet For Your Cat A lot of work has been done by researchers to determine what the feline “natural” diet looks like. The reason is simple. Many of the most common feline disease we diagnose these days are linked to how and what we feed our cats. According to the results of a study conducted on feral cats it was deduced that a feral cat will kill and eat approximately nine mice throughout the day. Another paper revealed that feral cats got 52% of their calories from protein and 46% from fat, which only leaves 2% available to come from carbohydrates. This shows that cats will eat multiple small meals throughout the day that are high in protein, high in fat, and low in carbohydrates. Let’s have a look at the do’s and don’ts on how to feed your cat. When to Feed Your Cat? After you bring a new cat home, it’s important to feed her meals at a time she is accustomed to and gradually make necessary changes as per your own food and schedule. Keeping the food and schedule consistent will ease your cat’s transition and keep intestinal upset at bay. It will also help her deal with the new-environment stress in a better way. What To Feed Your Cat? The foundation of a healthy cat diet is a flesh-based protein like meat, fish or poultry. Dry food should be high in animal proteins, and low in plant proteins. Carbohydrates should make up no more than ten percent of the mix of the cat food ingredients.

  2. How much should you feed your cat? A healthy, active 8-pound adult cat requires about 30 calories per pound per day. This figure was given by Animal Medical Center in New York. About 240 calories per day is required by the average 8-pound cat. Typically, the dry food contains about 300 calories per cup, and canned food contains about 250 calories in each 6 oz can. (or 125 calories per 3- ounce can). Using these counts as a guide, an 8-pound cat would need 4/5 cups of dry food or just less than a full 6-oz can (or two 3-ounce cans) of wet food per day. As per your cat’s preference of eating dry or wet food you can adjust the proportions. To accommodate changing metabolism and dietary needs you will need to modify your cat’s diet throughout her life. Feel your cat’s backbone and ribs. If the ribs and backbone show through her skin, she is too thin. If you can’t feel the ribs, your cat may likely be overweight. Adjust her portions accordingly. Cat Supplies
