  5. Byzantine Empire • Emperors served as both religious leaders and government leaders. They were considered to be above the law. • They had a hierarchical society and your punishment depended upon your status in society. • Women were not educated and were seen as a temptation to cause men to sin. • The church and government were very divided. • The Byzantine Empire was taken over by Germanic attacks.

  6. Church in the Byzantine Empire • The church and religion were strongly tied to the government. • The two chuches at the time were the Catholic church in the East and the Orthodox church in the West. • The goal of the Iconoclast Movement was to end the worshiping of icons. • The Great Schism was the division of the church into Catholic and Orthodox. • The Byzantine Empire place little importance on religion.

  8. Franks and Clovis and Pepin • The Catholic church was not supportive of the Franks. • Clovis was a leader who converted to Christianity in order to help rule his empire. • Pepin defended the church and gave land to the Pope creating the Papal States. • The Franks eventually settle in the country of Germany. • The Franks were the most powerful Germanic tribe and were closely tied to religion.

  9. Charlemagne • He kept all of the Frankish land together and ruled it all by himself. • He was considered a poor leader and was disliked by the Pope. • His main goal was to unite all of Europe under Christianity. • He was given the title “Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire”. • He was very intelligent and religious.

  10. The Western Church • They wanted to convert the Germanic tribes to Christianity. • It stopped spreading after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. • Benedictine rule guided monks and others who lived strict and orderly lives of poverty, humility and reverence. • The church was very divided from government and the two did not mix with each other. • The Church provided support to the people, hope and education because there were no real leaders after the fall of the Roman Empire.
