How Does Salt Effect Plants. 9-5 Project 1 March 2 2008. The purpose of my project is to see the effect that salt has on plants. Purpose. My hypothesis is that the salt will have a negative effect on the plants. I think that road salt will have the most negative effect on the plants.

  1. How Does Salt Effect Plants 9-5 Project 1 March 2 2008

  2. The purpose of my project is to see the effect that salt has on plants. Purpose

  3. My hypothesis is that the salt will have a negative effect on the plants. I think that road salt will have the most negative effect on the plants. Hypothesis

  4. Materials • 4 9'' plant pots • 4 plants ( Dumb cane 'Camille') • Road salt • Road salt/sand • Saltwater (from the ocean) • Measuring tape • Room temperature water • Potting soil

  5. Method • First replant the plants into the 9'' pots using potting soil. • Place 1 tbl spoon of road salt onto the surface of the soil onto one plant, and 1 tbl spoon of salt/sand onto another plant. • Water 3 plants (the control, the sand/salt and the salt) with ½ cup each of room temperature water. Water the final plant with ½ cup of room temperature seawater.

  6. Continue steps 3 & 4 every day for 2 weeks. Measure and record each plant every day noting changes in color and amount of leaves. • Every second day add one tablespoon of salt and salt/sand to 2 of the plants. (label each one so that you can know what to put on each.)

  7. Manipulated Variable: Different types of salt on each plant. Responding Variable: How the plants react to the salt. Ex; Height, color etc. Control Variables: - type of plant - size of pot - type of soil -amount of water added - amount of salt added. ( for the two that had salt.) Variables

  9. Changes While growing: Salt: - turned yellow and started to droop at day 3 - turned brown at day 8 Water: - New leaves started to come at day 5 - new leaves opened at day 11 Sand/Salt: -Started to turn yellow at day 2 Sea water: -A couple of leaves turned yellow at day 7

  12. My conclusion is that yes, salt does effect plants. My hypothesis was correct when I said that salt does effect plants. However I was incorrect when I guessed that the plain road salt would effect the plants most, the sand/ salt effect the plants the most. Conclusion

  13. Sources of Error • The plants were not the exact same height when i started the experiment. • The water may not have been the exact same temperature every time because i did not check. However it was were room temperature • The plants were watered with ½ cup of water each day which might have been too much. • Human error. I may have made an error in measuring and recording the plants. • I did not water the plants at exactly the same time every day.

  14. Ways to Improve • Start the plants from seed that way they would all start from the same point. • Use a controlled light source. • Do the experiment again to see if results come out differently. • Make sure that the temperature of the water is the exact same every time.
