  1. 2013-2014 Dual Credit Student and Parent Information
  2. What is Dual Credit? College credit and high school credit earned upon completion of a class with a grade of “C” or better Students will be exposed to college-level material and are considered college students As college students, dual credit participants are protected by FERPA law and their information cannot be disclosed to parents Students can earn 30+ college credits prior to graduating from high school Dual Credit courses generally transfer to most of Texas’ public colleges/universities (always check with the school you want to attend about transfer credits)
  3. Potential Advantages of Dual Credit Saves money Students can earn up to 2 courses of college credit each semester at no cost (for courses offered on the high school site) or at a discounted rate (for courses offered on the college site, all course methods apply) Reduces tuition and textbook costs for overall college education Gets many prerequisites out of the way Students take on the responsibilities of being a college student, easing the transition from high school to college
  4. How does Dual Credit differ from AP? AP (Advance Placement) DC (Dual Credit) Dual Credit are classes where college credit is earned upon completion Dual Credit course grades appear on the student’s official college transcript and are calculated into the overall college GPA Dual Credit courses are designed off a college curriculum and taught by high school teachers approved and hired as adjunct college instructors Students must apply and qualify to participate in dual credit and may not receive both AP/DC credit, if enrolled in an AP/DC course and not approved for dual credit AP (Advance Placement) are classes where college credit is not earned until the student achieves a certain score on the AP test at the end of the year AP credit is never calculated into the overall college GPA and is not posted on the college transcript until it has been accepted for credit and student requested Some high school courses are set up to offer both AP and DC AP scores can be considered for dual credit pre-reqs but may not be posted on the student’s college transcript
  5. Is Dual Credit the Right Choice for Everyone? Parents and students should consider goals, maturity, responsibility, and academic ability levels prior to enrolling in a dual credit program You might decide not to participate in dual credit if you: Are struggling with your other high school classes Feel overwhelmed with your current load of coursework and extracurricular activities Are not ready to take on college-level course work and the responsibilities of being a college student
