Understanding the FDA • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is a federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, one of the United States federal executive departments. The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the control and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs (medications), vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices, electromagnetic radiation emitting devices (ERED), cosmetics, animal foods & feed and veterinary products. As of 2017, 3/4th of the FDA budget (approximately $700 million) is funded by the pharmaceutical companies due to the Prescription Drug User Fee Act.

Hydrogenated FatsBeware • Shelf-life is increased, as the resulting oil is less susceptible to degrading over time (maybe bacteria have a difficult time eating it too!). • All nutritional value in the original oil is lost. • The texture of the resultant solid can be made to resemble that of natural, animal fats. • The previously perfectly natural oil becomes a totally unnatural, dangerous, relatively un-digestible "plastic".

  30. Hank Gathers Gathers' family filed a $32.5-million lawsuit charging negligence. • Video

  31. He was found to have an abnormal heartbeat (exercise-induced ventricular tachycardia), and was prescribed a beta blocker, Inderal. However, Gathers felt that the medication adversely affected his play, and he soon cut back on his dosage. As the West Coast Conference (WCC) Tournament neared, Gathers did not show up for repeated appointments to test if the reduced medication was still suppressing the arrhythmias. It was suspected Gathers was not taking any dosage on game days. • An autopsy found that he suffered from a heart-muscle disorder, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Gathers' family later filed a $32.5-million lawsuit charging negligence.Loyola Marymount settled out of court for $1.4 million, while the cardiologist who treated Gathers settled for $1 million.

  36.  He is best known for publicly championing a terminal patient's right to die via physician-assisted suicide; he claimed to have assisted at least 130 patients to that end. He famously said, "dying is not a crime"

  37. In 1999, Kevorkian was arrested and tried for his direct role in a case of voluntary euthanasia. He was convicted of second-degree murder and served eight years of a 10-to-25-year prison sentence. • He was released on parole on June 1, 2007, on condition he would not offer advice nor participate nor be present in the act of any type of suicide involving euthanasia to any other person; as well as neither promote nor talk about the procedure of assisted suicide.
