  1. SCTP Safety Guidelines 2012-13

  2. THE BEN AVERY SHOOTING FACILITIES ARE A WILDLIFE PRESERVE • THIS INCLUDES ALL OF THE RANGES – PISTOL, RIFLE, ARCHERY, SHOTGUN, AND ANY OF THE OTHER FACILITIES • ALWAYS LEAVE ALL WILDLIFE UNDISTURBED • THIS INCLUDES ALL BIRDS – DOVE, QUAIL, ETC. • THIS ALSO INCLUDES RATTLESNAKES, LIZARDS AND OTHER CREEPY CRAWLERS. • REMEMBER THIS IS OUR HERITAGE – PROTECT IT • VIOLATIORS CAN BE BANNED FROM BEN AVERY FACILITIES AND FROM THE CLUB

  3. Safety is Everyone’s Job It is your responsibility to immediately correct the hazard if you can do it safely. By reporting any infraction of safety rules to a coach, the life you save may be yours and/ or your best friend.

  4. SAFETY IS THE MAIN JOB AND RESPONSIBILITY OF EVERYONE. • ATHLETES • COACHES • PARENTS • FRIENDS • FAMILY • SPECTATORS • RANGE MASTERS • TRAP HELP

  5. ATHLETES MUST ALWAYS BE FREE OF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL. • PARENTS MUST KEEP ATHLETES HOME IF THEY ARE ON ANY MEDICATION THAT COULD ALTER THEIR MENTAL OR PHYSICAL ABILITIES • AN EXAMPLE WOULD BE BENEDRYL • ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER SHOOTING. • THIS REMOVES ANY SHOOTING RESIDUE LEFT FROM THE AMMO

  6. SAFETY IS A CONSCIOUS ACTION • NOT AN UNCONSCIOUS AFTERTHOUGHT • OR A SUBCONSCIOUS ACTION • IGNORANCE & CARELESSNESS ARE PRIMARY CAUSES OF GUN ACCIDENTS • COMPLACENCY LEADS TO CARELESSNESS • KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ATTITUDE TRUMP IGNORANCE • ALWAYS MODEL AND REINFORCE SAFE BEHAVIOR • LUCK MAKES US DUMB!!!

  7. EVERY PERSON ON THE FIELD MUST WEAR • EYE PROTECTION- APPROVED FOR SHOOTING • EAR PROTECTION- APPROVED FOR SHOOTING • A CAP WITH A BILL FACING FORWARD • Different Rules/ Different Places • Our rule- Keep it on when required and keep it forward when it is on. • APPROPRIATE CLOTHING • NO OPEN TOED SHOES • NO TANK TOPS • NO OFFENSIVE OR INAPPROPRIATE CLOTHING

  8. This photo shows PROPER eye protection, ear protection, and a cap with the bill facing forward.

  9. We also recommend that spectators and parents wear eye and ear protection when watching the shooters. This is a requirement on the sporting clays course Be especially sensitive to the protection of eyes and ears of infants and small children since their eyes and ears can be very fragile and sensitive to the loud noises we experience around a gun club environment.

  10. Etiquette • WE HAVE THREE PRIMARY OBJECTIVES in SCTP and Brophy Shooting Sports SCTP • BE SAFE AT ALL TIMES • HAVE FUN Brophy Objective • ALWAYS EXHIBIT THE BROPHY MANTRA- A MAN FOR OTHERS

  11. Etiquette • TO ACHIEVE THESE OBJECTIVES IT IS IMPORTANT FOR ALL OF US TO FOLLOW SOME BASIC RULES OF ETIQUITE • ALWAYS BE RESPECTFULL OF YOUR COACHES, OTHER SHOOTERS, AND SPECTATORS - USE CLEAN LANGUAGE • WHEN ON THE FIELD GIVE 110% OF YOUR ATTENTION TO IMPROVING YOUR SHOOTING • LEAVE CELL PHONES, IPODS, PAGERS AND ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN THE CAR OR WITH SOMEONE WHO IS NOT ON THE FIELD. • Do not leave the field to text or talk during practice or competition rounds. etiquette

  12. Etiquette • CONTINUING TO TRY TO BREAK TARGETS OR OTHER TASKS WHILE YOUR COACH IS TRYING TO TEACH IS NOT ONLY DISRESPECTFUL, IT CAN DIVIDE YOUR ATTENTION AND IS UNSAFE. (IT MAY ALSO BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR FUTURE) • STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN • WITH HEARING PROTECTION IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO TELL WHETHER YOU ARE HEARING WHAT IS BEING SAID UNLESS YOUR EYES AND ATTENTION ARE DIRECTED EXCLUSIVELY TO YOUR COACH. • ACKNOWLEDGE INSTRUCTION • IT IS EXPECTED THAT YOU WILL VERBALLY ACKNOWLEDGE THE INSTRUCTION BY SAYING, YES COACH, I UNDERSTAND COACH OR LIKE WORDS. • GIVE THEIR ADVICE A LEGITIMATE TRY • YOUR COACH HAS NO MOTIVATION FOR BEING HERE OTHER THAN TO HELP YOU IMPROVE, YOU OWE HE OR SHE THE RESPECT OF HEARING AND TRYING THE ADVICE THEY ARE OFFERING FOR YOUR PROTECTION OR IMPROVEMENT.

  13. Firearm Safety Rules ALWAYSKEEP THE GUN POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION. ALWAYSKEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO SHOOT. ALWAYSKEEP THE GUN UNLOADED UNTIL READY TO USE IT. BUT ASSUME EVERY GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED. ALWAYS WALK WHEN CARRYING A GUN.

  14. SAFE DIRECTION • ALWAYS KEEP THE GUN POINTED IN A SAFE POSITION- OFF YOUR TOE AND ABOVE YOUR BRIM • NEVER PLACE YOUR GUN ON YOUR TOE • PLACING A GUN ON YOUR TOE WILL GET YOU DISQUALIFIED IN A COMPETITIVE SHOOT AND MIGHT GET YOU KICKED OUT OF SCTP • ALWAYS KEEP YOUR HAND AWAY FROM THE MUZZLE OF A LOADED GUN • SHOOTERS WHO NEED TO CHECK THEIR CHOKES FOR TIGHTNESS MUST DO THIS BEFORE LOADING THE GUN AND WHILE THE ACTION IS OPEN.

  15. ATHLETE IS ON THE SHOOTING STATION WITH THE GUN POINTED DOWNRANGE. Notice he is not quite ready to shoot so his finger is off the trigger until he is ready to call for the target.

  16. UNLOADED GUN • ALWAYS ASSUME A GUN IS LOADED • AN UNLOADED GUN HAS NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE • THE SAFETY ON A GUN IS A MECHANICAL DEVICE THAT WILL FAIL • THE MOST IMPORTANT AND ONLY RELIABLE SAFETY DEVICE ON A GUN IS THE PERSON HANDLING THE GUN IN A SAFE MANNER

  17. UNLOADED GUN ALL GUNS MUST BE UNLOADED (NO AMMO IN GUN) UNTIL THE ATHLETE IS ON THE SHOOTING STATION AND IT IS THEIR TURN TO SHOOT ATHLETES MUST STAY ON THE SHOOTING STATION UNTIL THEIR GUN IS UNLOADED, INCLUDING ALL EMPTY SHELL CASINGS

  18. This photo shows the proper way to carry an auto loader or pump gun. The barrel is pointed up and the muzzle of the gun is above the bill of the athlete’s cap.

  19. This photo shows the proper way to carry a break open gun. The barrel is in the front and the athlete is in control.

  20. Always use gun racks when not on the shooting field. Note that this is the only time that a break open gun can be closed when not on the shooting station.

  21. The COACH GIVES THE gun a visual check as seen in the LEFT photo and then IN THE PHOTO ON THE right the coach checks the action by probing for any shotshells with his finger.

  22. The athlete on the right is passing the gun to the coach on the left with the action open and facing the coach who is receiving the gun.

  23. T A B + 1 T = TREAT EVERY GUN AS IF IT WERE A LOADED GUN. A = ALWAYS CONTROL THE MUZZLE, POINT THE GUN IN A SAFE DIRECTION, & KEEP THE ACTION OPEN. B = BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND THE TARGET. + 1 = ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO SHOOT.

  24. NEW AMMO MUST BE USED IN ALL AZGFD – CLUB GUNS • AT SCTP PRACTICES, ONLY USE THE AMMO THAT IS PROVIDED BY THE CLUB • AFTER PRACTICE, LEAVE ANY AMMO NOT USED WITH YOUR COACH • RELOADS CAN ONLY BE USED IN PERSONAL GUNS AT COMPETITIVE SHOOTS- NO LARGER THAN 7 1/2 SHOT. • RELOADS MUST ALWAYS CONFORM TO THE GOVERNING BOARD OF THE APPROPRIATE DISCIPLINE

  25. 20-gauge ammo is always yellow – this is an international standard. 12-gauge ammo can be any color the manufacturer wants to make it. NOTE THE DIFFERENCE – WHICH IS 12 AND WHICH IS 20?

  26. Note: In the left photo we see a 20 gauge shell in front of a 12 gauge shell. In the phot0 on the right we see how the 20 gauge shell can slide in ahead of the 12 gauge shell. We have now successfully loaded 2 different gauge shells in the same gun and when the 12 gauge shell is fired it will strike the 20 gauge shell causing a very destructive and possibly lethal incident.

  27. Mixing shotshell ammo is very dangerous. Placing 2 different gauges in the same gun can cause the gun to explode ruining the gun and injuring the shooter or others around them and COULD EVEN RESULT IN DEATH.

  28. ONLY LOAD ONE SHELL AT A TIME EXCEPT WHEN SHOOTING DOUBLES. • EXPERIENCED SHOOTERS CAN LOAD 2 SHELLS AS PERMITTED BY THEIR COACHES • IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM – SIGNAL YOUR COACH BY RAISING YOUR HAND • WHILE MAINTAINING CONTROL OF YOUR FIREARM AND ITS MUZZLE • ANYONE CAN CALL A CEASE FIRE • KEEP FOOD AND BEVERAGES OFF OF ALL SHOOTING STATIONS • WATER CAN BE CARRIED IN A POUCH AND USED WHEN NOT ON THE SHOOTING STATION • IF YOU DROP A SHELL DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PICK IT UP • SIGNAL YOUR COACH WHO WILL RETRIEVE IT FOR YOU.

  29. WHEN THE GUN GOES CLICK BUT DOES NOT FIRE, IT COULD BE A MISFIRE OR A HANGFIRE. • WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE SHOOTER SHOULD CONTINUE TO POINT THE GUN IN A SAFE DIRECTION, KEEP THE GUN MOUNTED, AND HOLD THE TRIGGER DOWN FOR AT LEAST 2 FULL SECONDS. • SIGNAL THE COACH OR REFEREE FOR ASSISTANCE • WAIT FOR THE COACH OR REFEREE TO CHECK THE GUN BEFORE RELEASING THE TRIGGER OR TRYING TO OPEN THE GUN. • IF IT IS A MISFIRE THE GUN WILL NOT FIRE AND THE EVIDENCE WILL SHOW EITHER A MECHANICAL GUN PROBLEM OR AN AMMO PROBLEM

  30. ANOTHER TYPE OF MISFIRE IS CALLED A SQUIB • THE ROUND MAY BE DISTINCTLLY LOWER IN SOUND LEVEL OR FEEL. THE DANGER IS THAT THE WAD MAY NOT HAVE CLEARED THE MUZZLE CREATING A MAJOR HAZARD. • WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE SHOOTER SHOULD SIGNAL THE COACH OR REFEREE FOR ASSISTANCE • WAIT FOR THE COACH OR REFEREE TO CHECK THE GUN BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO RELOAD

  31. A HANGFIRE IS WHEN THERE IS A DELAY BETWEEN PULLING THE TRIGGER AND THE SHOTSHELL FIRING. • WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE SHOOTER SHOULD CONTINUE TO POINT THE GUN IN A SAFE DIRECTION, KEEP THE GUN MOUNTED, AND HOLD THE TRIGGER DOWN FOR AT LEAST 2 FULL SECONDS • WAIT FOR THE COACH OR REFEREE TO CHECK THE GUN BEFORE RELEASING THE TRIGGER OR TRYING TO OPEN THE GUN. • IF IT IS A HANGFIRE THE GUN WILL FIRE DURING THIS PERIOD SO THE SHOOTER NEEDS TO BE READY FOR THE GUN TO GO OFF.

  32. Proper Storage and Transport These rules must be followed to the letter.

  33. All personal firearms shall be secured in the home in an appropriate and locked location, and ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS unloaded. • ALL ammunition shall be kept in a locked enclosure separate from the firearm. • Firearms shall be transported to and from the range in an appropriately fitted case which has been secured in the trunk or if no trunk is available, at least outside the reach of the driver. If you are stopped by law enforcement, be sure to immediately advise the officer by saying, “ For both our safety, I want you to know that I do have my competition firearm that is locked in its case in the… (trunk, back seat, etc.) • Under absolutely no circumstances are any firearms or ammunition ever to be taken to the Brophy campus, any other Brophy facility or event. • Firearms and ammunition are to be transported directly from the practice or competition facility to the home storage location. Do not stop to run errands, pick up your girl friend, get groceries for your mom or take in a movie until you have relocated your firearm and any ammunition to its safe storage.

  34. Proper Storage and Transport Any Infraction of these rules will result in your immediate dismissal and permanent barring from any future participation with the club.

  35. Expectations • We excel as individuals. We win as a team. • There is no room for disrespectfulness, emotional outbursts or other immature behavior. • Follow the rules. • Be a man for others.

  36. EXPECTATIONS FINALLY, A WORD ABOUT OUR “CULTURE” “We support each other, we encourage each other, we admonish each other, we challenge each other, we respect each other, and we model what we believe. It is only though these overt and repeated showings of care that we can grow as individuals and as a team.”

  37. “SERIOUS FUN”
