  3. “State of DMP” • Multi-pathing continues to be important for customers • Key driver for Storage Foundation sales • Customer needs not solved in this area • Although DMP functions well in many configs, scale and complexity challenge the claim of availability and heterogeneity • Large clusters and LUN-counts often lead to incidents • AIX and Linux releases have had significant problems • The primary concern in the future releases is to restore quality • Management and futures initiatives depend on the baseline of DMP quality

  4. 5.0 DMP Get-Well Plan: Error detection and rapid, intelligent failover • Error detection • DMP will capture more HBA, switch, and array information to detect errors • Default DMP will scan paths more frequently • Intelligent failover • DMP algorithms will be further optimized for large and complex SANs • Path failures will result in RCA by DMP; other paths that share the perceived point-of-failure are marked “suspect” and not used • Fast failover/failback • Failover and failback speeds will improve through better leveraging of array capabilities and failing multiple paths that are suspected as down • Algorithmic changes to failover/failback analysis to support NDU and improved performance after a failure has been resolved

  5. 5.0 DMP Get-Well Plan: Platform support, array support, and device discovery • AIX, Linux ports will be better managed • Increased usage of APMs and polling to resolve problems experienced in AIX and Linux • Array support • Improved and broader APM coverage over the 5.0 release • Improved ASL/APM administration practices • Device discovery will be reduced in time and complexity • Improved ASL loading algorithms to avoid “conflicts” between redundant ASLs • Device discovery caching • Improved CVM and mid-range array support • Centralized management capabilities through Habanero • Bring down all paths to a given LUN or through a controller in one operation

DMP backport release coming to address 4.x customers experiencing DMP headaches • DMP backport will be released on: • LxRT 4.1, HxRT 4.1, SxRT 4.1, AxRT 4.0 • No HxRT 3.5 or SxRT for x86 ports in plan • DMP backport will include the bulk of 5.0 fixes but none of the device discovery improvements • Backport will be released non-concurrently over 2006 • Current target is to have releases span from Q206-Q406 • DMP backport is being tested for performance and quality • Performance enhancements will be published to the field and support for customer advisory

DMP “Review Desk” to address near term 4.x DMP concerns • Until the backport and 5.0 are released, DMP is still exposed to concerns of supportability • DMP PM is leading a “Review Desk” to assist with customers who may test DMP’s scalability and quality • Contact the DMP “Review Desk” if your customer has: • Hosts that managing >1000 LUNs • Third party multipathing drivers in use  • SAN storage that includes mid-range/new storage arrays • Hosts that are running on AIX or Linux • Hosts that are running in greater than 4-node clusters using CVM or VCS • Review Desk can be contact by going to: http://rampart.corp.symantec.com/dmp/

Early reports on 5.0 and backported DMP are encouraging… • QA and pLab are testing in larger and more complex configurations than earlier DMP testing • >2000 LUNs • Leveraging emulation tools (e.g. SANBlaze) for outage/failure simulations • In early testing, configured DMP has seen a mid-sized configuration (>300 LUNs) move from a 3 minute outage to no detectible downtime • DMP PM will deliver detailed reviews of test improvements and expected 5.0 performance guides

Future directions of DMP in 5.0+ • Centralized management of DMP • DMP can heavily leverage CC-Foundations to simplify DMP administration and reporting • DMP throttling and management based on application/host type • Leveraging multiple hosts for error responses • DMP can leverage distributed framework to improve error detection, diagnosis, and avoid reliance on likely disrupted paths • DMP performance with intelligent switches and storage virtualization tools • DMP can improve the visibility and management of vLUNs through decomposition • DMP support in virtual environments
