  1. Report of the ad hoc meeting on Space Weather

  2. Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Chair: Suzanne Hilding (NOAA) Rapporteur: Jérôme Lafeuille (WMO) CMA CNSA ESA EUMETSAT ISRO JMA KARI KMA NASA Participants NICT NOAA ROSCOSMOS WMO GCOS IROWG CGMS Secretariat EUM/SIR/VWG/12/0???, v1, 10 July 2012

  3. Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Establish a coordinated approach to the monitoring of space weather and the reporting of space weather-related spacecraft anomalies Assess how CGMS is organized to address space weather matters Reports by NOAA , CMA, NASA, KMA on their space weather activities including observation (space/ground), modeling, forecasting methodology, products and services, user outreach WMO/ICTSW calling upon coordination by CGMS of space weather observation on met satellites, and contribute to overall observation strategy HLPP 5.1: Cross-cutting issues and challenges Slide: 3 EUM/SIR/VWG/12/0???, v1, 10 July 2012

  4. Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Space weather activities should be driven by user requirements and needs for products and services Needs clear identification of the user basis (survey to participating countries, or results of existing surveys) Scope for synergy between space weather services and meteorological services to certain users (e.g. aviation, telecommunications, energy, disasters) Need to communicate the socio-economic benefits of space weather prediction with policy makers, public, non technical community Discussion: A few guiding principles ( 1 ) Slide: 4 EUM/SIR/VWG/12/0???, v1, 10 July 2012

  5. Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Historical role to report on spacecraft anomalies and to host space weather payload CGMS can assist in global coordination of satellite aspects Should keep focus on operational needs - how to support provision of products and services Scope for integration of observing capabilities across space weather communities Baseline and integrate current suite of observations to better sustain future observing capabilities CGMS should recognize other international partners with complementary roles (e.g. COSPAR for scientific aspects) Discussion: A few guiding principles ( 2 ) Slide: 5 EUM/SIR/VWG/12/0???, v1, 10 July 2012

  6. CGMS Members to nominate a team to develop the TOR for CGMS space weather activities, taking into account the guiding principles discussed in the ad-hoc session, for consideration by CGMS-42 Volunteers to serve on this team: CMA, NOAA, WMO JMA, KMA (to be confirmed) Action : Set up a team to develop CGMS/Space Weather ToR

  7. CGMS Members to nominate points of contact to work with WMO/ICTSW in order to define jointly a procedure to improve the collection, availability, and use of satellite anomaly information Action (short term) : Collecting spacecraft anomaly information
