Echinoderms. Echinoderms are animals with spiny skin, five-part radial symmetry, an internal skeleton, water vascular system, and suctioncuplike structures called tube feet. Sea urchins and starfish are examples of echinoderms.

  1. Echinoderms

  2. Echinoderms are animals with spiny skin, five-part radial symmetry, an internal skeleton, water vascular system, and suctioncuplike structures called tube feet. • Sea urchins and starfish are examples of echinoderms. • The internal skeleton is made up of hundreds of calcium carbonate plates.

  3. The water vascular system is used to help the echinoderm move. • The main structures in the vascular system are tube feet, radial canal, ring canal, and the madreporite. (see figure 29-3 page 639) • The madreporite is where water is pumped into and out of the vascular system.

  4. Many echinoderms are carnivorous, others eat plankton or detritus. • The crown-of-thorns starfish caused a lot of damage to coral reefs in the Pacific Ocean with their large appetite.

  5. Comparing Invertebrates • A phylogenic tree shows which phyla originate from a common ancestor. • A parasitic roundworms that can enter humans from undercooked pork include tapeworms and trichina worms. • Terrestrial invertebrates breath using a variety of adapted organs including book lungs, mantle cavities, and tracheal tubes.

  6. Aquatic invertebrates breath using gills. • Most animals can not breath or pump blood without muscles. • Muscles work by contracting. The muscles get shorter and thicker as they contract.
