  4. Benefits of Adoption • Higher, clearer, fewer standards • Able to benchmark across states and compare internationally • Common development of: • Teaching tools • Professional development • Assessments • Economies of scale

  5. Criteria • Fewer, clearer, and higher • Aligned with college and work expectations • Internationally benchmarked • Include rigorous content and application of high-order skills • Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards • Evidence – and/or research-based

  6. Development and Timeline • College- and career-readiness standards • Draft released for public comment • K-12 standards/learning progressions • Drafts forthcoming • To view documents, visit: www.corestandards.org • Public comment: January 2010 • Final drafts: Target date is early 2010

Common Core State Adoption • State adoption: • Voluntary • By the State Board of Education • 100% of the common core K-12 standards in English and mathematics to be adopted: • Implementation within 3 years • In its entirety or up to 15% state-specific content added • Next: Consortia of states will be encouraged to develop assessments & curricular materials

  8. Mathematics Similarities: Ohio and the Common Core • International benchmarking • Curriculum Focal Points, from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics • Learning progressions • Some of the same people

  9. Benefits of Ohio’s Draft The internal draft mathematics standards support: • Direct input into the Common Core standards • Easy comparison of the Common Core with the internal draft • Early consideration of learning progressions to re-vision school mathematics
