  3. Today we are remembering and saying thank you to all those who were involved in World War 1 Following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire) in June 1914, Britain declared war on Germany. The First World War, also know as 'The Great War' was fought between the Allied powers (mainly Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan and, from 1917, the United States) and the Central Powers (mainly Germany, Austria-Hungary and Turkey). A Century’s Memories

  4. On Remembrance Day we remember men and women who died or were injured. Many soldiers in World War One were very young, many were killed. Even more suffered injuries that changed their lives. Families lost fathers, sons and brothers. A Century’s Memories

  5. November is the eleventh month of the year. And it was at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month that World War One ended back in 1918. At eleven o’clock on a Monday morning the guns fell silent. Every year, Remembrance Day reminds us of this. A Century’s Memories

  6. At 11 o’clock, we take time to be silent. And we remember. A Century’s Memories

  7. ‘Remembrance’ is more than just remembering. Remembering a piece of homework you need to complete or to tell your friend something. Remembrance is something we do together. That is why many of us wear poppies: it shows we have not forgotten what happened long ago. A Century’s Memories

  8. Listen to interviews from relatives of people serving in WW1 who lived in Bath and NE Somerset. Why is it so important to remember them? What can we learn from the tragedy of WW1? A Century’s Memories

  9. "Today almost every one of us, whatever our racial, ethnic, national or religious roots, is directly connected to the First World War. The war of 1914 became global and total: it was hard to escape its impact wherever you were." Professor Sir Hew Strachan, 2014 A Century’s Memories
