  2. 1917 • Smith Hughes • National vocational education Act • Established vocational agriculture courses. How has this impacted us today?

  3. 1926 • Henry Groseclose • Agriculture teacher trainer and former agricultural education instructor. • Organized Future Farmers of Virginia. • Used as a model for FFA.

  4. 1928 • FFA established • During the National Livestock Judging contest in Kansas City, Missouri 33 students from 18 states established Future Farmers of America. • Provide leadership training for high school students of vocational agriculture. • Leslie Applegate of Freehold, N.J. is elected the first president • Dues are set at 10 cents annually.

  5. 1929 • Official FFA colors • National blue & Corn gold • Colors were adopted and still used today. • Georgia FFA was the 10th state to be chartered. Where do you think Georgia stands in FFA membership?

  6. 1933 • FFA Jackets • Blue corduroy with the FFA emblem on the back. • Jackets are worn nationally by FFA members. • More than 50,000 jackets are manufactured each year.

  7. 1934 • Rhode Island & Alaska • Only states that did not have chartered associations. • Rhode Island chartered in 1950. • Alaska chartered in 1976.

  8. 1935 • New Farmers of America • Organization for African American boys interested in agriculture. • Patterned after Future Farmers of Virginia.

  9. 1944 • National FFA Foundation • Established in Washington, D.C. • Used to raise money for FFA programs and activities • Today the Foundation is located in Indianapolis, Indiana and raises more than $7.3 million annually.

  10. 1950 • FFA as a federal charter • U.S. Congress passes Public Law 81-740 • Stipulates that a U.S. department of education staff member be the National FFA Advisor. • FFA continues to be recognized by congress as an intracurricular part of the educational program.

  11. 1959 • FFA headquarters • Established in Alexandria, Virginia • Established on land belonging to George Washington estate • During the dedication, members participating in the first National Leadership Conference for state officers place a hand full of soil from each state around the flag pole.

  12. 1965 • Unity • New Farmers of America merge with the FFA adding 50,000 members to the organization.

  13. 1969 • Women • Allowed national membership • Made it possible for them to hold office and participate in competitive events at the regional and national level.

  14. 1971 • Alumni • National FFA Alumni founded • Providing opportunities for former FFA members and other supporters to become involved with their local student chapters. • Today the Alumni has 42,000 members

  15. 1988 • Delegates to the National FFA Convention change “Future Farmer’s of America” to the National FFA Organization. • Recognize growth of agriculture and agricultural education to encompass the more than 300 careers in the science, business, and technology of agriculture • Membership opened to middle school students

  16. 1991 • Virgin Islands and Guam are granted association charters.

  17. 1996 • National FFA Convention Moves • Moved from Kansas City to Louisville, Kentucky.

  18. 1998 • National Convention was held in Kansas City for the last time in November 1998. • Set an attendance drawing 49,240 members, guests, and supporters.

  19. 2013 • 86th National FFA Convention will be held in Louisville, Kentucky.
