  1. “Faith Only” - A Popular Doctrine X. OF JUSTIFICATION (A) That justification includes the pardon of sin, and the gift of eternal life, on principles of righteousness; (B) That it is bestowed not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemer's blood His righteousness is imputed to us. XI. OF FAITH AND SALVATION We believe that faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, including repentance, is the only condition of salvation. (Doctrine Statement: Baptist Church; www.holmenbaptistchurch.org/home.htm) “…we are justified by faith only, is a most wholesome doctrine and full of comfort.” (Article IX; Meth. Discipline)

  2. “Faith Only” Not New! 21 …receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves…. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. (James 1)

  3. “Faith Only” Not New! 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? (James 2)

  4. “Faith Only” Not New! 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. (James 2) Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.(James 4:17)

  5. Steps of Salvation Blood Water Rev. 1:5 Washes Acts 22:16 Baptized Into Remits Acts 2:38 Mt. 26:28 Salvation IN Christ Gal. 3:26-27 Cleanses 1 Pet. 3:21 Heb 9:14 Acts 26:28 Jn. 12:42-43 Salvation Baptized – Mk. 16:16 Mt. 11:20 1 Cor. 1:18 Confess – Matt. 10:32 Repent – Lk. 13:3; Acts 17:30 Acts 7:57 Believe – Mk. 16:16; Jn. 8:24 Hear – Mk. 16:15; Rom. 10:17

  6. Billy Graham vs. the Apostle Peter “You may know that we urge immediate and extensive Bible study for each convert. As the Scripture is reviewed, the place of baptism will surely be discovered. If baptism were a requirement for salvation, we would certainly say that. But you couldn't support that knowing, for example, that the thief on the cross had no opportunity for baptism or church membership. Yet on his confession, paradise was secured. Jesus said to him, ‘Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.’ (Luke 23:43)” (www.billygraham.org) Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you--not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience--through the resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 3:21).

  7. Billy Graham vs. the Apostle Paul Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name. (Acts 22:16). “It (baptism) also is a sign that Jesus has now washed away all your sins. Think of it: You have been cleansed of every sin you've ever committed, because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross for you! You aren't saved because of anything you have done; you are saved only because you have put your faith and trust in Christ and what He has already done for you.” (www.billygraham.org)

  8. Saving Faith Doesn’t Stop at Baptism Faith Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you (2 Pet. 1:10-11). + Virtue + Knowledge + Self-Control + Perseverance + Godliness + Brotherly Kindness + Love

  9. Faith Can Be Seen! 18 Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. 19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus. 20When He saw their faith, He said… (Luke 13) But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” (Lk. 5:5).

  10. Saving Faith Seen in Actions! …even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him… (Jn. 12:42) Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. (Acts 2:41) Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols. Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile worshipers, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there. (Acts 17:16-17)

  11. Saving Faith Seen in Actions! 13 Now I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that I often planned to come to you (but was hindered until now), that I might have some fruit among you also, just as among the other Gentiles. 14 I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to unwise. 15 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” (Romans 1)

  12. We Must Battle Apathy Apathy: state of mind that is without feeling or emotion; a lack of interest. Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. (Rom. 7:4) By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. (Jn. 15:8) …the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. (Mk. 4:19) • Makes us lukewarm & self-deceived about our real condition before God (Rev. 3:17). • Renders us barren and we bring forth no fruit unto God (Rom. 7:4; John 15:8; Mk. 4:19). • Causes us to be a bad influence on our brethren (1 Cor. 5:6). • World notices; therefore, hinders the conversion of lost souls (Matt. 5:16). Because you say, “I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing”—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked… Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Mt. 5:16) …Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? (1 Cor. 5:6).

  13. We Must Battle Apathy 7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. (Gal. 6)

  14. We Must Battle Apathy But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Heb. 11:6) But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue (2 Pet. 1:5) And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. (Heb. 6:11-12)

  15. Causes of Apathy Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But He said to him, “Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” (Lk. 12:13-15) • Materialism, Affluence (Lk. 12:13-15) • Worldliness (Jas. 4:4; Gal. 5:19; Matt. 12:30) • Evil companions (1 Cor. 15:33; Prov. 13:20) • Absence from God’s people (Heb. 10:24-25) • Gossip, Backbiting, Murmuring (1 Cor. 10:10) • Other Christians not working (Gal. 5:7-9) Adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. (Jas. 4:4) Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness (Gal. 5:19) He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad. (Matt. 12:30) Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” (1 Cor. 15:33) He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed. (Prov. 13:20) You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. (Gal. 5:7-9) And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. (Heb. 10:24-25) Nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. (1 Cor. 10:10)

  16. Apathy Destroys • Kills Personal Bible Study (2 Tim. 2:15) • Kills Prayer & Reliance Upon God (Lk. 18:1) • Kills Desire To: • Visit the sick (Matt. 25:36) • Do personal evangelism (Acts 8:4) • Faithfully attend services (Heb. 10:25) • Heartily participate in the services • Kills desire to give generously (2 Cor. 9:6-7) • Weakens the Preaching of the Gospel (Isa. 30:9-11) • Discourages the Work of the Church (Eph. 4:11-15)

  17. Rom. 12:7-15 Heb. 3:13 Heb. 10:23-25 Matt. 5:6-16 1 Pet. 2:2-5 Matt. 25 2 Pet. 1:5-11 2 Pet. 3:18 2 Tim. 2:15 1 Pet. 4:9 Attend services, meetings Teach classes Study for class Invite others to services Show hospitality Visit, call the weak brethren Visit the sick, elderly, etc. Open homes for Bible studies Lead in services Help around the building Busy Working in the Vineyard

  18. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. (2 Tim. 4:6-8) Places for the Faithful & the Lazy And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matt. 25:30) Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. (Rev. 2:10) And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again.” Immediately the fig tree withered away. (Mt. 21:19)
