  1. TEACHING AND LEARNING WORLD LANGUAGES What I have learned about teaching and learning a world language from FLTEACH is that Passion is a requirement. Teachers need to be passionate about the languages they teach, as well as about the cultures in which those languages are spoken. If a teacher does not have this passion, it will be difficult to get students excited and motivated to truly learn foreign languages. Only teachers with this passion in their soul, working together, will be able to change the American people’s general aversion to learning foreign languages and cultures. FLTEACH QUOTES “A solid, two-year exposure to a foreign language and the people who speak it should not be considered a failure.  It is only a failure when a student studies no foreign language at all.” Dianne Couts “This hits at the heart of our profession. Would a potential law enforcement officer enter the profession if he/ she were told that 90% of the criminals that were arrested would be returned to the streets without a conviction? Would a potential doctor enter the profession if he/she were told that 90% of the patients would not recover after being treated?“ Paul Conley “Teaching is the greatest act of optimism” Colleen Wilcox “It seems to me that WE are the ones who have to be the catalysts here. WE are the ones who have to be out there promoting language and standing up for it and not just sitting around complaining about it. if not US, then WHO???” Barbara S. Andrews PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITIES Through participating in a professional community I have learned that foreign language teaching, like most things in our life, is a collaborative effort. If we truly hope to succeed and make a difference in the lives of our students and the world, we need to add the knowledge and experience of others to our own. With a greater store of knowledge and experience to draw on, we will be able help and teach our students in the best, most effective ways possible.
