  1. Evidence of Climate Change

  2. Evidence of Climate Change • Scientist’s believe that the Earth’s climate is changing again – and that this time the change is happening because of human activity! • Mainly a result of additional greenhouse gases

  3. 1. Rising Temperatures • General trend of increases global temperature • In Canada the average temperature has increase by 1◦C in last 55 years

  4. 2. Melting Glaciers, Ice Sheets and Sea Ice • You will find out about this in your assignment!

  5. 3. Rising Sea Level • Due to: • 1. Melting ice sheets • 2. Thermal water expansion (water expands when it heats up) • Results in: • Floods

  6. 4. Changes in severe Weather • More heat waves and hurricanes • Mainly caused by warmer ocean temperatures

  7. 5. Changes in precipitation patterns • Northern hemisphere: more rain, less snow • Northern Canada: more annual precipitation • Southern Africa, Mediterranean and South East Asia: drier

  8. 6. Changing Seasons • Many areas have shorter less severe winters and longer growth seasons

  9. 7. Changes in Ecosystems • North America: plants flowering earlier and animals breeding earlier • Animals and plants migrating towards poles

  10. Effects • These changes are going to have major impacts!

  11. Homework • Read pg. 373-377 • Questions p. 378 #1, 2 • Start thinking of things YOU can do to help prevent climate change!
