Introduction • In this lesson, the following topics will be addressed so that students may become more knowledgeable about the state of Ohio as they learn specific facts about the state: When Ohio joined the union; as the birthplace of seven U.S. presidents; State Symbols; Agriculture; Natural Resources; and Ohio’s most famous tourist attractions. • This lesson is designed for a fifth grade social studies class and fulfills the Ohio Content Standards for such as follows: • Describe characteristics of Ohio • Introduce new vocabulary related to productive resources- natural resources

  4. Ohio is nicknamed The Buckeye State! (means “great river”) Ohio Becomes a State On March 1, 1803, Ohio joined the union, becoming the 17th state. Ohio is bordered by five states: Michigan Indiana Kentucky West Virginia Pennsylvania And by one of the five Great Lakes: Lake Erie The Capital of Ohio is Columbus

State Symbols Ohio’s State Flag Ohio’s State Seal • The stars represent that Ohio was the • seventeenth state admitted in to the • United States. • The stripes represent the roads and • waterways of Ohio. • The hills in the background, the river and the harvested fields symbolize the diversity of Ohio's geography. • The bundle of wheat symbolizes Ohio's fertile harvest and its dependence on agriculture.

  8. Ohio’s Agriculture Ohio’s agricultural resources include: Corn Dairy Products Hogs Poultry/Poultry Products Sheep and Wool Fish Did you know…. 1 in 7 Ohioans has an agriculture-related job? And that each farmer in America produces enough food to feed 155 people? Amazing!

  11. And Finally, Did You Know… Who knows, maybe one day you will be number 8! Ohio is known as the “Mother of Modern Presidents?” It’s true! Ohio is the birthplace of 7 United State’s presidents. They are: Ulysses S. Grant (18th president) Rutherford B. Hayes (19th president) James A. Garfield (20th president) Benjamin Harrison (23rd president) William McKinley (25th president) William Howard Taft (27th president) Warren G. Harding (29th president)
