  2. Who, When, and Where?(Boys Trip) • THIS TRIP IS FOR 9TH AND 10TH GRADE STUDENTS ONLY • THERE WILL BE TWO DEPARTURE POINTS FOR THE TRIP • FROM TURKEY TO MOMBASA • FROM AMERICA TO MOMBASA • DATES FOR THE TRIP • August 10th DEPARTURE • August 20th RETURN

What Will We Do There? • Community Service Activity • Orphanage (Islamic organization) • Children ages 6-15 • Responsibilities: •  Feeding and playing with the children • §   Cleaning and drying dishes. • §   Cleaning and disinfecting toys. • §   Mopping floors • §   Organizing games and sports for children • §   Laundry work

What to Bring? • April weather in Kenya can be quite rainy • Temperature ranges from 62F-85F ( 17C-29C) • Bring comfortable, conservative clothing • Jeans, long skirts or tunics • Long sleeves are highly recommended (protection from the strong Equatorial sun and mosquitos!) • Sneakers, flats, any good comfortable shoes. At least one pair of sneakers for safari. • A hat and good sunglasses for protection from the sun • A plastic poncho for the light to moderate rains • Light jacket for cooler days and nights • Sun screen (45 SPF or higher) must be applied daily and frequently • Mosquito repellant- must be applied daily and often! • Binoculars- For Safari

  5. What to Bring-Part II • Any medications you may need, prescriptions, Tylenol, Imodium AD, etc.. • Extra Food! THIS IS A BIG ONE: • Bring extra snacking type food to keep up your energy during the • day and to stave off hunger. • We will only have breakfast and dinner while in Kenya • Bring your unlocked smart phone if you plan to buy a SIM card at the airport • Bring a kindle, nook, or book to read • A money holder (wallets are not a good idea) • A pillowcase and sheet • Tissues- lots of little packs of tissue!! • Towel • Indoor shoes/slippers • Prayer rug, if needed • MOST IMPORTANT- A POSITIVE ATTITUDE- REMEMBER THIS IS AN ADVENTURE AND LIFETIME EXPERIENCE.

  6. What Not to Bring No shorts or sandals No flashy or expensive clothing or handbags No jewelry or expensive watches

  7. FOOD/SNACKS TWO MEALS A DAY WILL BE PROVIDED – BREAKFAST AND DINNER BRING FOOD/SNACKS THAT YOU THINK YOU WILL NEED TO SUSTAIN YOURSELF! DINNER WILL MOST LIKELY BE WITH TURKISH FAMILIES BUT BREAKFAST WILL BE IN DORM. DO NOT DRINK THE WATER-(TAP WATER) IN KENYA-ONLY DRINK BOTTLED WATER.

  8. Where will we stay? We will stay in school dormitories. They will have security No leaving dorms after sunset- VERY IMPORTANT!!

  9. Vaccines/Medical Info • See a doctor before we leave and verify that all immunizations are up to date. Especially POLIO and TETNUS • Tell your doctor that you are going to Kenya (Nairobi) and ask if he/she recommends any additional vaccines and/or medicines for you. • Recommended vaccine: Yellow Fever

  10. Misc. Information • Electrical Outlets are G type- 240 V 50 hz • Bring a converter and adapter. • Don’t bring laptop, we will not have internet! • Bring smart phone *** • Can purchase SIM card • At airport in Nairobi

Money, Money, Money • How much money should you bring? • Turkish and American passport holders will need $50.00 for Kenyan visa to be purchased at the airport in Nairobi • Smartphone SIM card- $$$ • Safari- $50.00 • Extra spending money for souvenirs, shopping, etc.. • Goods and products are relatively inexpensive in Kenya • Conversion Rate: $1.00 (USD) = 86 Kenyan Shillings (KES)

  12. What I need from you! • One copy of each person’s passport (You should also keep a copy in your luggage and carry-on) • If you still owe money for this trip, please bring your payment in ASAP to Mr. Demirors or the accountant.

  13. Deadlines • JUNE 16TH to decide and pay the fee • Cost: $450+ AIRFARE ($1300)
