  6. Field tested procedures • 1. 2 ply Kraft paper bags have been proven in the field to work well in many conditions. Two ply bags are preferred for best results. Uses are ideal for bakery, floral, and many produce items. Even items such as moist bulk lettuce, if gently shaken off can be placed into these bags. • 2. Many hearty (firm) produce items can be placed directly into the collection bins. Items include but are not limited to; melons, potatoes, apples, pears, oranges, avocados, celery, carrots, & beets. • 3. Bio-compostable plastic bags should be used selectively. These bags are the highest cost option, but are necessary in many cases. They can be identified by their light green color, & text on the bags that indicate BPI certified. Items like pizza sauce, pudding, mashed potatoes, or anything that will smear or stick to the carts should be placed into these bags. These bags perform best when loaded with about 25 lbs. of food scraps/waste. Also items should be allowed to cool before placing them into this style of bags. You can put solid hot product in paper. They should be tied off and placed into the collection bin with the knot facing upwards. • 4. Some items require more specific instructions. Onions, garlic, tomatoes, grapes, kiwis and all other "softer" produce items should placed into the paper bags if possible, and the bio-compostable plastic bags if necessary. • 5. In most cases, common sense should be used to decide which containment method is to be used for individual scenarios. Proper containment is essential to maintain sanitation and reduce odors & pest. • If you are unsure about any specific items, or are in need of supplies, please feel free to contact us directly ; Marshall@nopeVA.com (804.346.9744) or leave a message on our web site www.nopeva.com
