  2. Mrs. Schutkowski • Graduate from ASU in Secondary Ed. History • 6th grade SS (previously taught ELA) • 6th year at CMS! • Married for four years and have three year old Sylvia! • I love: • Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee • Coca Cola and Chocolate • Hiking South Mountain • Traveling and going to concerts • Listening to music and watching movies • Reading books! • Sponsor Battle of the Books in the Spring • Will be starting a monthly book club in September

  6. 6th Grade Social StudiesYearly Curriculum Overview 1st Quarter • Geography • Origins of Cultures & Civilizations • Middle East & North Africa • (Mesopotamia & Egypt) 2nd Quarter • Middle East & North Africa (Egypt) • Europe 3rd Quarter • Europe • Russia & Eurasian Republics 4th Quarter • East Asia (China & Japan) • South Asia (India, Pakistan, Nepal) Students will understand G.R.A.P.E.S. (geography, religion, achievements, political structure, economics, and social structure) and how it applies to various world regions.

Mindful of the World Around Us 8th grade students befriend and mentor 6th grade students Activities geared toward building confidence, happiness, academic/AVID skills and a mindfulness of the world. All about making the 6th graders feel comfortable and proud to be at Centennial Middle School WEB Leaders will meet with 6th graders during Advisory at least once a month. “Where Everyone Belongs”

  8. CMS Expectations 3Ps = PBIS (positive behavior interventions and supports) • Prepared • Polite • Performing ROARs will be awarded to students who demonstrate the 3Ps. In exchange, ROARS are used as school currency in the ROARS store. Mrs. Propps’ Class • Class Dojos • 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens

Social Studies Supplies • 3” binder with 7 plastic pocket dividers labeled: • lined paper with 3 hole punch • 1 composition book by August 7th! • 1 binder pencil pouch • 1 binder ruler • pencils • colored grading pens • 1-2 highlighters • post it notes • index cards • AGENDA – checked daily in Social Studies

Communication • Teacher’s Classroom Websites/Assignment Calendar • Email (updated address with front office) • P/T Conferences (Fall and Spring) • CMS List Server Email Distribution • Remind for CMS- one way text message notification • 6C will send out weekly newsletters on • Parent/Guardian Responsibilities: • Know grades, due dates, and missing assignments • 1. CMS agenda • 2. Check StudentVue and/or ParentVue • 3. Require printed progress reports if necessary • Praise effort not just the end result • Help to manage and cope. Short term problems vs. Long term problems • You know your student and….what motivates them.

Criteria for Placement • Initial placement of students as they transition into 6th grade includes • Identification in one or more areas of giftedness AND/OR • Multiple measures of high ability (e.g., AzMERIT proficiency, classroom grades, teacher recommendation) • Full criteria available at https://www.kyrene.org/AdvPlacement
