South Dakota School of Mines holds the West River Math Contest • This years contest is scheduled for May 11th, 2014 • For any high school math student • There are 5 different divisions: • Algebra I • Geometry • Algebra II • Advanced Math • Masters • Class A division and Class B division • The Department Chair of Mathematics and Computer Science organizes the West River Math Contest Contest information

  3. The Newell High School math teachers get to pick the students to compete in the math contest. • They will either pick: • The kids with the top grades in the class(es) • OR • The kids they think will do the best at the contest Class room with students taking their test Getting there

  4. Paul Gunn • AND • Lorie Johnston Newell high school math teachers Mr. Gunn teaches: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and General Math. Mrs. Johnston teaches: Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry.

  5. Newell students have frequently placed or won their divisions at the contest. • About 20 schools take part in the contest • Approximately 475 kids compete in the Math Contest • This year marks the 64th annual West River Math Contest • Contest begins at 9:30 AM • Award ceremony at 1:30 PM • Test is NOT multiple choice and is about 10 pages long Previous winning team Information

  6. There is a team award for each Class A and Class B • Called the Outstanding Team Performance award • Prizes awarded for 1st through 5th in both classes • An overall winner in each division is also awarded Some contestants with their awards Prizes South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

  8. The purpose of the West River Math Contest is to serve a opportunity for local students to compete against other students. • Anyone can be in the contest, but the teachers get to decide who gets to go. Purpose
