  1. Horizon 2020 – overview Craig Sharp National Contact Point Nanotechnologies, advanced materials and advanced manufacturing and processing - NMP Craig.Sharp@tsb.gov.uk

  2. What are National Contact Points? National Contact Points (NCPs) are publicly funded (many by the Technology Strategy Board) to provide advice and assistance to UK participants within specific areas of Horizon 2020. This includes the Legal & Financial NCP service. • All member states have NCPs: • http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/page/nationalcontactpoint • (or just search on “NCP Horizon 2020” – or similar..)

  3. NCP support • Feedback to/from Commission on work programmes • • Distribution of documentation (forms, guidelines, etc.) • • Clarification of documentation and rules • • Guidance on choosing thematic priorities and instruments • • Advice on administrative procedures and contractual issues • • Feedback on proposals • • Assistance in partner search • - through theme specific databases or across the network of other Member State NCPs • - through network support (EEN, KTN, etc) • Some feedback on results..

  4. National Contact Points (search on “NCP Horizon 2020”) • Legal and Financial aspects • SMEs* • Access to Finance* • European Research Council • ‘Future and Emerging Technologies'; • 'Marie Curie actions on skills, training and career development'; • 'European research infrastructures; • 'Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)'; • 'Nanotechnologies, advanced materials and advanced manufacturing and processing'; • 'Space'; • 'Health, demographic change and wellbeing'; • 'Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research and the bio-economy'; & 'Biotechnology'; • 'Secure, clean and efficient energy'; • 'Smart, green and integrated transport'; • 'Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials'; • 'Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies'; • 'Security' • Euratom • Joint Research Centre**

  5. €32.7Bn for CRD across themes: (Energy, Health, NMP, ICT, etc.) Drilling down - Nano, Materials, Production call (NMP): NMP theme budget €3.5Bn for projects across nano, materials & production topics UK position (NMP) 2nd only to De UK (NMP) successful projects (07-12 calls) ~€290m requested. UK (NMP) participations in projects (07-12): ~800 What happened last time.. FP7 CRD (2007-13)

  6. Horizon 2020 Successor to current Seventh Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities (FP7) Will also incorporate European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and innovation elements of CIP under one single programme Funded by general EU budget – 2014-20 “Multiannual Financial Framework” (MFF) 3rd largest programme after Structural Funds and CAP Timeline for agreement on Horizon 2020 is dependent on MFF agreement…

  7. Company participation • Large companies: • With existing R&D activity or that which could be stimulated and leveraged through Horizon 2020. • Hi-tech SMEs: • Spin outs from universities or firms with hi-tech and knowledge based products and in-house R&D capability. • Mid-tech SMEs: • With some R&D activity or that which could be stimulated and leveraged through Horizon 2020.

  8. Resources needed to apply (CRD areas) • As a partner: • Typically 2-3 person weeks with no previous experience required • As a leader: • Typically 2-3 person months with experience highly recommended • i.e. Go in as a partner first to learn the ropes!

Europe in a changing world – Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies 7. Secure societies – Protecting freedom and security of Europe and its citizens

  14. A single set of rules for participation and dissemination : for the whole innovation chain Simplified and uniform evaluation criteria : excellence, impact, implementation (excellence to be sole criterion for ERC actions) Simplified funding : Single funding rate for research projects; flat rate for indirect costs Faster time-to-grant : to be reduced to 8 months Fewer, better targeted controls and audits Simplification

  15. Direct costs: Up to 100% of total eligible costs for research actions Up to 100% (non-profits) or 70% (others) of total eligible costs for ‘close-to-market actions’ Indirect costs: A further 25% of total eligible direct costs No full cost option Funding model
