  2. Definitions Recreation voluntary activity engaged in leisure time, motivated by intrinsic values. It is a structure/ organised element type of leisure There are definite links between leisure and recreation. Outdoor recreation- challenge in the natural environment, recreative not competitive. With these definitions in mind, give examples of a recreative activity and an outdoor recreative activity and describe why they fall into that particular category. Contemp Studies yr 12

Adventure • There has been a growth in adventure sports e.g. rock climbing/canoeing/climbing • There has been a growth in new adventure sports e.g. Mountain biking/jet skiing/snowboarding • Why has this growth come about? • Need for excitement in an otherwise sedentary life. • Increased leisure time. • Activities more accessible. • Developments in technology. • Appreciation of the natural environment. • Escape from an urban lifestyle.
