  3. Types of Smoke • While first-hand smoke is that inhaled directly by the smoker and second-hand is the smoke exhaled (and inhaled by others), third-hand smoke is the residue from second-hand smoke.

  4. Smoke – 3 main forms • Cigarettes • Wrapped in paper • 600 added addictive ingredients • 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke • 30+ cancer causing agents (called carcinogens) • Nicotine – addictive ingredient in cigarettes • Cigars • Wrapped in tobacco leaf • Large cigars may contain more than a half an ounce of tobacco. This is as much tobacco as a whole pack of cigarettes. It can take from 1 to 2 hours to smoke a large cigar. • Pipes • is the practice of tasting or inhaling the smoke produced by burning a substance, most commonly tobacco, in a pipe. It is the oldest traditional form of smoking.

Smokeless 3 Main Forms • Chew– tobacco that is placed on the inside of the cheek and is absorbed into the bloodstream through the mouth • Snuff • European: ground tobacco (powder) that is inhaled through the nose • American: similar to chewing /dipping tobacco • Snus – often confused with Snuff. This is usually placed under the upper lip and doesn’t require spitting. Snus can be found in loose or pouch forms. *ALL forms of smokeless tobacco can cause cancer. These are NOT better choices than cigarettes. They can ALL lead to health issues.

Smokeless Tobacco Facts SMOKELESS TOBACCO CAUSES: • Halitosis • Bad Breath • Leukoplakia • white wrinkled skin patches in the mouth • Cancer associated with smokeless tobacco • oral (mouth) and pharynx • Nicotine • is the same addictive ingredient in smokeless tobacco as in smoke tobacco (cigarettes)

Smokeless and secondhand smoke • Smokeless tobacco can cause bad breath and tooth decay as well as sores in the mouth that can become cancerous • Secondhand smoke has been linked to lung cancer and heart disease; in children, it can cause asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, and respiratory infections

Tobacco Addiction (smoking cigarettes) • Stage 1 • First Use: Trying a cigarette for the first time • Stage 2 • Occasional Use: Smokes at certain times with certain people • Stage 3 • Regular Use: Smokes every weekend or at the same time every day • Stage 4 • Addiction: feels the need to smoke and may need help to quit

  9. Resisting Pressures to Use Tobacco • Give reasons for saying “no” • Use nonverbal behavior • Avoid people who are bad influences
