  2. The South After the War • Southern cities & towns were in ruins • Countryside had been devastated by fighting and armies passing through • Loss of farm buildings, machinery, work animals and other livestock • African -Americans faced a very uncertain future

  3. The South After the War • Property Losses • Farms & Plantations lost value • Farms & Plantations suffered from neglect • 1/5thof the South’s white male population died • Plantations lost workers • Transportation losses (railroads were useless)

  4. Challenges for African-Americans • 4 million slaves now free • But what do they do now? Most had no money or education • Plantation owners could not afford to pay them, thus a lack of jobs • Parents wanted their children to be educated
