  1. In 1543 the Dutch explorers arrived in the ports of Japan to trade with them.

  2. They brought something that changed Japanese society…the musket.

  3. From 1603 -1867 Japan closed its doors to the world. Only one Dutch ship a year could trade with them.

  4. The shogun, named Tokugawa, was afraid of losing control over the people with new ideas from outsiders.

  5. In 1853 – Commodore Matthew Perry from the United States signed a treaty Japan allowing them to trade.
