  2. The Problem • 250 expelled students with 30 awaiting assignment (# will continue to grow) • Disproportionate representation of • Minority students • Disadvantaged students • Special Education students • Majority are middle school students • Large # are 4th suspension “magic bullet” students

  3. NEED TO REDESIGN SO… • Students will be isolated from others • There is limited ability for interaction • Education is individualized for student needs • Students’ inappropriate behaviors are targeted for change

KEYPOINTS • Model based on “logical consequences” • Students assigned to work cubicles • Limited interaction with other students • “Cooling off” periods allowed • Only extreme behaviors will result in sending to the streets • Transportation provided • Uniforms provided • Shortened instructional day
