Accomplishments of 2001 CMP • Shortened Route • Focused marketing and development on a single, shorter Great River Road route to best highlight the River • Achieved National Scenic Byway designation • Destination Areas • Developed Mississippi River Destination Area themes for marketing campaigns

Accomplishments of 2001 CMP • Byway Gaps • Requested the MN Scenic Byways Commission designate eligible gapped communities and segments • Work with non-eligible communities to gain designation through local outdoor off-premise advertising ordinances • Regional Meetings • Tourism Grant • Developed plan for FY 2002/2003 tourism marketing program grant solicitation

Accomplishments of 2001 CMP • MN-MRPC Structure • Added Regional Commissioners • Amended statute to allow non-traditional funds to be received and spent • Capital Projects • Identified highway and amenity project needs • Route Adjustments • Reviewed the National Scenic Byway route • Made recommendations for revisions to the route in Little Falls, St. Cloud, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Hastings

  8. Accomplishments of 2001 CMP • Roadside Storybook Project • Developed plan for Great River Road interpretation • Secured funding, developed and installed • Lake Itasca State Park • TH 371 Rest Area • Sand Prairie WMA • Sibley House • Inver Grove Heights Swing Bridge • Iowa State Entrance

Accomplishments of 2001 CMP • Unpaved Roads • Identified all remaining unpaved sections of GRR • Three counties paved all sections except one • Mississippi River Trail • Identified route (70% on GRR) • Signed route from Iowa to Elk River 2013/2014 • Elk River to Headwaters to be signed 2015 • Marketing and bicycle-friendly assessments in MRT Host Communities

  10. Accomplishments of 2001 CMP • MN Great River Road Map • Hospitality Training • Increased local tourism industry awareness • Developed MN-MRPC hospitality training program • Developed GRR travel booth, Exploration Guide, and map tablets for each Destination Area
