  9. Class Rank • Class rank is based on the cumulative grade point average for high school credits earned for grades 7-12. A student’s GPA is derived by dividing the total number of grade points by the number of semester courses attempted. The first official class rank is determined during the spring semester of the junior year and is updated after each subsequent semester.

  12. What College would I like to attend? • Dream School? Reality School? • Select a college that may be a “stretch for you. • Select at least one “reality” school. • Select 2 or 3 schools between “dream” and “reality” school.

  13. The Right College Fit • ACADEMICALLY • PERSONALLY • SOCIALLY • BE REALISTIC! • The college you choose should NOT be one that will overwhelm you!

  15. Steps for applying to college • 1. Complete College Applications • 2. Mail application or submit on line, don’t forget application fees. • 3. Check with college to confirm receipt of “online” documents. • 4. Check for Housing Application • 5. Accept/Decline Deadline

  16. College Application Obtain application (from the college or online) • For Texas Public—Apply Texas (Texas Common App) www. Applytexas.org • For Most Private—The Universal Common Application www. commonapp.org Fill it out and SAVE until ready to submit Best to submit on-line

Student Profile Packet • Student Profile Packet must be filled out if you are requesting a recommendation letter from the counselor’s office. • Available on line at the Counselor page of the CRHS website. • This MUST be submitted in order for your counselor to write the recommendation letter. http://www.katyisd.org/campus/CRHS/Pages/Counselors.aspx

Our Process;Paper Form • Letter of Recommendation or application that needs to be completed by the counselor and it is Not online: • Complete a Pink Counselor’s Checklist • Submit the Counselor’s Checklist, Student Profile Packet, application, envelope • Check deadlines, this must be submitted 15 working days before it is due!

  19. On Line Applications • Student Profile Packet must be filled out and submitted to counselor • Invite your counselor • Check with your counselor to make sure they received the email. • Check with the college to make sure they “pick it up” it goes away after 14 days. • You still need to give the counselor 15 working days from the time you turn in your Profile Packet and invite them on line.

  20. NEW & IMPORTANT • If applying on line you must turn in an Electronic College Application Follow up Form

  23. Transcripts • Fill out Transcript Release Form(these are on line on the CRHS website in the counselor section) • If transcript only; submit to release form to registrar’s office with a stamped and addressed envelope and a dollar.

  24. College Essay DO’s • CONCISE– 300 words or less • HONEST—no “gimmicks” • INDIVIDUAL—sets you apart from others • ACCURATE—error-free writing • VIVID—interesting DO I COME ACROSS AS AN INTERESTING PERSON? EDIT/REVISE!!!!!!!

  25. College Essay AVOID • EXCUSES • GENERIC EXAMPLES • SARCASM • PLAGIARISM • PARENT’S REWORDING • RECREATING OR RESTATING THE RESUME • WAITING UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE

  26. College Admission Terms Early Decision-A binding commitment to attend the college if you are accepted. Says, “I am only applying to you.” Early Action/Notification-Simply applying early so you will receive acceptance notification early-No commitment to attend. Wait List-Admission pending Provisional/Summer Admit-Varies from school to school

  27. Appeals • If you don’t get accepted to the college you want, please see your counselor to discuss any appeals process that may be available.

  28. FINANCIAL AID • APPLY EARLY !!!! • Distributed on a need basis and first come, first serve basis.
