INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING THE HUMAN FIGURE.

A look at how artists use the human figure to create meaning.

Artists have been drawing the human figure for thousands of years.

They didn’t really worry about drawing realistically they simplified and stylized the human figure so it was more symbolic.

The Egyptians got a little more detailed but the figures were still very symbolic.

It was the ancient Greeks who began to look more closely at human anatomy.

The Greeks were more realistic but still a little stiff.

It took the Renaissance to finally get a realistic human figure.

Michelangelo actually cut up dead bodies to study the anatomy. The result was much more realistic figures.

The figures were still very idealized.

Then artists began to draw every day people who were far from ideal.

After the invention of the camera artists wanted to do more than just capture a likeness. They wanted to use the human figure to create meaning.

Artworks by Marc Chagall

Artworks by Alberto Giacometti

In fact, in many ways we came full circle, we now use the human figure in art much more as a symbol, like our cave dwelling ancestors.

Artist today use the human figure in a variety of ways.

  • Sandy Skoglund uses the human figure as part of her installations.

Ron Mueck creates incredible large realistic representation.

A little creepy but amazing.
