  2. Question to Consider w/ Groups • Do you see any patterns about the murders or circumstances around the crime?

Ku Klux Klan (KKK) • Attacked African Americans • Beat people and burned homes • Lynched victims, killed on the spot without a trial • Attacked white Republicans • Restore Democratic control of the South • Keep former slaves powerless • Kept Republicans away from the polls • Democrats increased power

  6. Reflection Activity: Analyzing Political Cartoons

Describe the “mood” or “tone” of the cartoon (Hint: facial expressions & colors will help) • List any titles, captions, and words you see in the cartoon. • Based on the words/captions, what or who is the main subject of the cartoon? • What actions is the main subject taking part in? (Hint: What are the main subjects doing?) • List anything else you observe that you think is important to the overall purpose of the cartoon. • Based on what you already know, what facts/information can you provide about the main subject of the political cartoon? (Hint: Think about class notes)  • Now, you take everything you wrote down, and draw conclusions. Do you think the author is showing the main subject in a negative or positive way? Explain your answer. • What do you think the author’s overall message is in the cartoon? What is the author trying to tell/show people? Use examples from the cartoon to support your answer!
