  1. # ______ Name ______________________________ Date ____________________ CENTER STREET CEMETERY SEARCH CAUTION: MANY GRAVESTONES ARE OLD AND FRAGILE, SO BE CAREFUL! Also, please remember where you are.BE RESPECTFUL! (NO RUNNING - NO YELLING - YOU MUST STAY WITH YOUR CHAPERONE) Find the information by using the cemetery map on the back page and your detective skills. 1. Take a minute to look at your surroundings. Compare them to the map on the back page. Be sure you understand which way is north - use the compass rose to help you. 2. Use the map and the directions given in the LOCATIONS column to find the gravestone. The letter of each question matches the letter on the map. (Note: Not all locations have a brown post with a yellow number to mark it, so read the directions carefully!) 3. Read the words on the gravestone (or ask your chaperone to help read what it says). 4. Answer the question in the QUESTIONS column. SECTION X LOCATIONS Cemetery entrance Many repaired gravestones throughout the cemetery Post #8 (knocked down): Caleb Atwater next to tall monument for Joshua Atwater Post #10: CalebMerriman (near south wall of Section X) SECTION X QUESTIONS What year was the Center Street Cemetery established?_______ As you walk through the cemetery, notice how some of the damaged gravestones have been repaired. List 2 different methods you see. 1. ______________________________ 2. ______________________________ The gravestone of Caleb Atwater’s wife, Ruth, is to the right of Caleb, while his son Joshua’s monument is to the left. Caleb’s father died on Nov. 29, 1757 and is buried two rows north of him. His name was Capt. _____________ Atwater. Caleb Merriman was the grandson of Captain Nathaniel Merriman, one of Wallingford’s original settlers. He had 8 children. He died of ________________________. How was the name of our town misspelled on his gravestone? ____________________________ A. B. C. D. Center Street Cemetery Search - L. Andrews (Revised May 2001) page 1

  2. SECTION Y LOCATIONS Post #11: John Moss (on east edge of section Y) Post #13: Samuel Whittelsey (southern part of Section Y, south of the tall brown Whittelsey monument from the 1700’s and 1800’s) West (and slightly north) of Post #13: gray stone with a rounded top above an angel’s face Post #15: (no number on post) John Hull (directly across the dirt road from the flagpole in Section Z) Post #17: (no number on post) Beach family monument (almost to the western edge of Section Y) SECTION Y QUESTIONS John Moss was born in 1604 in Wallingford England. He was one of the original settlers in Wallingford. It is thought that he may have been responsible for naming our town Wallingford. He was _________ years old when he died. His gravestone has the shape of a __________________ carved on it. Samuel Whittelsey was born in Saybrook in 1676. He had 8 children. He was the minister of the First Congregational Church after Rev. Street died. Wallingford later named a street and a school after him. It is difficult to read the words on the white stone, however the entire grave marker is unusual because it is shaped like a _____________________. The gray gravestone with the rounded top over a picture of an angel says: “In memory of Mr Caleb D.......” (part of the stone is broken off). Caleb died of ___________________________________. He was ill for _________ hours. John Hull was the first _____________________________ to settle in Wallingford. To induce (or persuade) him to come here, at a town meeting it was voted to give him a tract of land that was how big? ________________________________ Moses Y. Beach was born on January 15, _________. His mother, Lucretia (wife of Moses S. Beach), died on May 21, _________. Moses Y. Beach was ________________ old when his mother died. E. F. G. H. I. 3. SECTION Z QUESTIONS Lyman Hall was born in Wallingford. He was a minister and a teacher in Connecticut before moving to Georgia as a doctor. He later signed the Declaration of Independence and was elected as the first governor for the state of Georgia. Only the original gravestone is here in Wallingford’s Center Street Cemetery. Lyman Hall’s actual remains are buried in __________________, Georgia. Although he was not the first person to die in Wallingford, William Holt was the first to be buried in this cemetery. The small stone is carved with: ___________ - year he died ___________ - his name (initials) ___________ - his age when he died Abraham Doolittle was one of the original leaders of Wallingford. His small original gravestone says that he died in ________. In front of the stone, a large monument was erected in 1918. It tells about his life, including the fact that he had _______ children. Wallingford now has a park named in his honor. The small stone next to the brown post belongs to Rev. Samuel Street, the first pastor of the First Congregational Church. He died in 1717. The new monument next to the old stone was not put there until __________. This was ________ years after he died. The large monument lists the names of James and Mary B. Hough and all of their children. There were 7 children. Fill in the chart on the next page with the information about each child. Then answer the question. (Be sure to check every side carefully!) SECTION Z LOCATIONS Post #1: Lyman Hall (next to flagpole along dirt road) Post #3: William Holt (small stone northeast of #1) Post #2 (number not on post): Abraham Doolittle (behind a more recent large white monument) Post #5 (number not on post): Rev. Samuel Street (near the wall, north of #4) Tall monument for Hough family (near east entrance) J. K. L. M. N. Center Street Cemetery Search - L. Andrews (Revised May 2001) page 3

  4. N. (Continued from page 3) Data about the mother and father of the Hough Family have been entered on the chart below. You now need to list the information about each of their children on the chart. The Hough Family Name Age When Died Date of Death James (father) 62 years Jan. 16, 1826 Mary B. (mother) 72 years April 13, 1840 Mary (daughter) Divan (son) David (son) James (son) Caroline (daughter) Emeline (daughter) Isaac (son) Questions: 1. What is so surprising and sad about this family? _______________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ 2. What could be the reason for 3 children all dying in October of 1795? ______________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ 3. What can you figure out about Caroline and Emeline from the information you have about their ages and when they died? ___________________________________________ Center Street Cemetery Search - L. Andrews (Revised May 2001) page 4

  5. BONUS: There are many gravestones leaning against the Center Street wall of the cemetery. Why do you think they are there, instead of being set up in rows like the other gravestones? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ MAP OF CENTER STREET CEMETERY - WALLINGFORD CENTER STREET M N L SECTION Z K  J A H E SECTION X I G SECTION Y F C SOUTH COLONY ROAD (ROUTE 5) SOUTH ORCHARD STREET D (houses on South Orchard Street) N W E S shed PRINCE STREET KEY A,B,C,etc = locations on question sheet = flagpole = cemetery wall Center Street Cemetery Search - L.
