Freedom, Rebellions, and Freedmen • Slaves had to make up what they were bought for • Freed By Master • 3 notable rebellions • Spartacus • Eunus “King Antiochus” • Kleon • Athenian • Salvius • Result was crucifixion • Freedmen • Took orders from former masters • Could not hold office • Could not marry former masters • Sometimes developed lives

  6. Spartacus • Trained by army • Was a Slave • Was a gladiator • He and 2 Gallic Gladiators led revolt • 200 Gladiators • 80 escaped • Formed a band of 70,000 slaves • Hid in alps • Planned escape • Fought Crassus in Spain • Body never found

American Slaves • Roman Slaves were prisoners of war • American Slaves were captured from Africa • American Slaves commonly worked in fields • Roman Slaves worked fields, clothed their Masters, carried their Masters, and many other chores • American Slaves escaped through the underground railroador bought their freedom • Roman Slaves killed themselves, were released, or bought their freedoms • American Slaves were eventually freed by President Abraham Lincoln • Roman Slaves were always slaves
