Overview: The Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences is a leading state-of-the-art Multi Speciality Hospital and Teaching Institute at Kalapet, bordering the state of Tamilnadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry in Southern India. The college started in the year 2002 with 100 admission per year. Now the college has been approved for recognition of MBBS degree granted by the Pondicherry University (Ref.: Letter No.MCI-34(41)/2007-Med./26987, dated 08.01.2008)

Research Highlights: • An average of fifty International and National publications per year since its inception • A number of projects sponsored by the Puducherry government being carried out by the department of Community Medicine. • Fourteen ICMR short term students’ project sanctioned for the year 2009.

4. Department of General Medicine The Department of General Medicine is fully equipped to treat all types of medical cases including Critically ill patients. We have facility to admit patients in the high-tech Intensive Care Units with advanced monitoring facilities. We also have the support of Biochemistry and Microbiology Laboratories which do a large number of tests including special test (Immunological and Hormonal assays), and a Radiology department doing all advanced radiological investigations including interventional radiology. We also have the support of a fully functioning modern blood bank capable of providing blood components. We are supported by super specialty departments like Nephrology, Neurology, Cardiology and TB & Chest diseases with all facilities for special investigations & treatment.

5. Department of General Surgery Prof.R.David Sadhu, the Head of the Department has many years of experience in treating patients with the following diseases. 1. Neck swellings 2. Oral cavity tumours. 3. Breast tumour and Breast Cancer. 4. Cancers of Stomach, large intestines He has done extrensive work on vascular injuries associated with fractures of the extremities. He helped spine surgeons at Vellore in exploring and safeguarding AORTA, and IVC from operations on lower Lumbar vertebral bodies. He has chaired many scientific sessions at the conferences and he is the most wanted teacher in General Surgery CME's

Department of Paediatric Surgery • This department is well equipped and undertakes following types of cases • All trauma cases • All major and minor abdominal surgeries • Pancreatic and retroperitoneal surgeries • All cancer surgeries • Esophageal and gastric surgeries • Endocrinal surgeries including adrenal surgeries

7. Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology • This department is a self contained unit with dedicated doctors, seperate theaters, labour, wards and intensive care unit. The faculty has been drawn from all parts of India and has been trained extensively in India and abroad. Patient care and expertise on par with best of centers in India and abroad. Department of Anaesthesiology The Department of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences is a highly integrated, collaborative group of dedicated anaesthesiologists. The department caters to various specialties like General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, ENT & Ophthalmology, Plastic & Micro-vascular Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neuro Surgery and Paediatric Surgery. The variety of cases integrated with ongoing clinical research & education results in wide ranging expertise in the anaesthetic management of patients of all ages

Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology This department is staffed and equipped to deal with all types of orthopedic cases including joint replacement, spine surgery etc. Treatment Facilities Joint Replacement Surgery (Primary and Revision surgeries) Spine Surgeries (Decompression, Stabilization and Fusion procedures) Deformity Corrections and Limb lengthening procedures. 10. Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation was established in the year 2002. This department is concerned with treating CHRONIC PAIN conditions and REHABILITATION for patients who are DIFFERENTLY CHALLENGED. The  team  members  include  a  young  energetic group of  2 M.P.T, 10 physiotherapists, one occupational therapist and one prosthetic and orthotic technical staff who are all well trained and experienced. The department is well equipped with electrotherapy and a gym with exercise therapy equipments.

12. Department of ENT • The ENT Department has come a long way since we started. Surgeries Done • Micro-Ear Surgery • Conventional and Endoscopic Nasal Surgery • Microlaryngeal Surgery • Laser-assisted surgery • We have a sound protected Audiology room where Pure Tone Audiometry and Tympanometry is routinely done. Headache and Giddiness Clinics are held weekly. Hearing aid trials are also done for those who need it.

14. Department of Dermatology Dermatology department of PIMS, Pondicherry is a full-fledged speciality with adequate staff available for teaching and training of MBBS students, and for care of patients suffering from Skin Diseases, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Leprosy

Department of Dentistry The Dental Department provides a quality comprehensive dental care that includes diagnosis, treatment, as well as prevention of the diseases affecting the hard and soft tissue of the oral cavity. Advanced dental procedures are done using latest gadgets and high quality materials while strictly adhering to the standards of sterilization.

17. Department of Community Medicine The department is located in the main OPD building of the institution. Along with spacious and well furnished accommodation for all faculties, we have well-equipped P.H Lab, a museum and library in our department. The department is having six health centers with Resident Medical Officers and field staff.

Department of Community Medicine Research Activities A study of renal diseases in the rural Puducherry - India A study on the dental health status among rural school childrenIn this study, a team of health workers by the community dentist have examined over 1400 school children in the area. Dental services have been made been made available at the center A study of the prevalence of consanguineous marriages and pregnancy outcome in the rural area.In this study (n=914) all the eligible couples have been interviewed and the data so will be used to educate the population of the effects of consanguineous marriages. 19. Department of Cardiology Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed with highly qualified medical personnel, the Cardiology Department of PIMS is the Cardiac Centre par excellence. Each of the seven beds in the Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU) is staffed with trained nurses on a 1:1 basis and has facilities for monitoring ECG, Hemodynamics, Oxygen saturation and respiration with a team of Physician / cardiologist in constant attendance. Bedside echo cardiography, X-rays, Temporary pacing, mechanical ventilators and Intra-aortic Ballon Counter Pulsation (IABP) support are also available here. The ICCU handles a host of Cardiac emergencies such as acute MI, heart failure, Cardiogenic shock and Life threatening arrhythmias.

Department of Cardio Vascular Surgery Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery department at PIMS is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure to perform all types of Cardiothoracic and Vascular procedures like Valve Replacement Valve Repair Coronary Artery Surgery Off Pump Cardiac Surgery Aneurysm repair including Complex Aortic Root Replacements Paediatric Cardiac Surgery Cardiothoracic and Vascular trauma Lung Reduction Surgeries VAT surgeries

21. Department of Nephrology • Daily Nephrology OPD services with full time Nephrologist and transplant physician with a multi-speciality hospital backup, for any kidney related problem • A well qualified and experienced team of dialysis personnel with international experience on its roles to deliver quality dialysis and care. • Reverse Osmosis water treatment plant producing ultra-pure water: This makes complications like chills, fevers, low blood pressure, vomiting etc. on dialysis almost nonexistent.

22. Department of Neurosurgery The Department is endowed with competent Neurosurgeons having a long experience in dealing with multitude of surgical disorders involving brain, spine, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. We are one of the best centers in the region, to have ‘state of the art’ facilities including Carl-Zeiss Surgical Microscope, Microsurgical instruments, Intra-operative imaging and excellent post-operative ICU.

Department of Plastic, Cosmetic & Micro Vascular Surgery This Department at PIMS has well trained and acknowledged faculty with wide experience within the country and abroad to treat, advice and train in the field. Faculty in this department has done pioneering works in the area on facial reattachment, replantation of body parts, Cosmetic surgery etc

24. Department of Biochemistry The Department of Biochemistry has 2 wings. The College Wing of the Department is involved in the teaching of MBBS and B.Sc Nursing students. The department is backed by a committed group of teachers who have adopted new teaching methodologies and clinically oriented lectures to make the subject interesting and prepare the students for their future clinical years. The students are also encouraged to take up short research projects.

25. Department of Microbiology Department of Clinical Microbiology forms an integral part of the high standard of patient care and management of Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences. It offers state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities for some of the Infectious diseases. Round the clock laboratory services with rapid diagnostic techniques is undertaken making reports available to clinicians at the shortest time possible. This facility is extended to medical practitioners and hospitals in this region. A molecular diagnostic laboratory is shortly to be commissioned for offering services in the diagnosis of tuberculosis and some viral infections.

29. Department of Anatomy Anatomy department is one of the best and efficient departments in Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences.  It has a very eminent and experienced set of teaching faculty.  It is housed in the ground floor of Basic Sciences Block. The department has a big Dissection Hall with 200 students' capacity.  It is equipped with a special exhaust duct system, Camera with close circuit TV and public addressing system.  There are 2 big tanks for storing 50 cadavers at a time.  It has two separate rooms for storage of bones and chemicals.  Embalming facilities are also provided.  Both official and private embalmings are undertaken.  Students are provided with individual lockers.

30. Department of Physiology The Department of Physiology is situated on the first floor of the Basic Sciences Research & Training Block of P.I.M.S. The Department is recognized for training of Students for MD, MBBS, B.Sc., Nursing and Medical Records Technology Students. It has several well-equipped laboratories for undergraduate and postgraduate student training and research. Two students have been chosen to carry out research under the ICMR Studentship scheme in Physiology. Haematology Laboratory: This laboratory is provided with all facilities for individual practical training.

31. Department of Forensic Medicine The forensic department at PIMS trains medical students in all aspects of forensic medicine including toxicology and proper medico legal documentation. The department imparts enough knowledge to our medical students that they are confident to tackle all kinds of medico legal problems as well as medico legal autopsies. This is the only private institution in the state of Puducherry recognized by the state government for performing autopsies since 2003. The department performs on an average around 150 autopsies a year. The number is expected to increase in the coming years as the department has carved a niche for itself as a high quality performance oriented department second only to none in the entire union territory and neighboring districts of Tamil Nadu.

32. Department of Pharmacology The Department is involved in teaching MBBS and B.Sc., nursing Students. Faculty members are actively involved in conducting research in pharmacoepidemiology. The department is also trying for collaboration with Pharmaceutical companies for Clinical trials. The faculty members are also involved in medical education, teaching statistics and research methodology to postgraduate students. We are planning to acquire a HPLC, and start MD in Pharmacology and start a bioavailability / bioequivalence center in the near future.
