  1. Sortsforskelle i følsomhed overfor manganmangel Plantekongres 2005. C.A Hebbern

  2. Mn efficiency: An ability to grow well on Mn deficient soil • Winter barley genotypes Vanessa and Antonia identified as Mn efficient and Mn inefficient. • In hydroponics, the genotypes did not differ in Mn concentration in shoot or root. • Vanessa had a higher uptake rate of Mn than Antonia; maybe important in field conditions.

  3. Chlorophyll fluorescence • Reveals clear differences between Vanessa and Antonia

  4. Hansatech Handy PEA

  5. Chl. fluorescence can diagnose Mn deficiency

  6. Chl. fluorescence and Mn concentrations are closely linked

  7. Vanessa and Antonia: hydroponics Control and Mn deficient plants clearly different with fluorescence. Genotypes also different to each other.

  8. Important differences • Mn efficient Vanessa dissipates more light energy as heat • Mn inefficient Antonia is more chlorotic • Antonia may therefore be more at risk of oxidative stress, leading to reduced yield

  9. Mn efficiency: can we be certain? • Field trials over four years have identified some consistent differences • Antonia is Mn inefficient • Vanessa and Carola are Mn efficient • These results confirmed at KVL • But field trial data can be difficult to interpret...

  10. Field trial requirements • Control plots and Mn deficient plots must be clearly different • Soil must be Mn deficient • Control plots and Mn deficient plots must be on directly comparable soil (close neighbours!)

  11. Field trials for Mn efficiency • We calculate Mn efficiency as (Mn- / Mn+) x 100, Where the Mn- and Mn+ plots are found opposite each other in the field trial (comparable soil). 100% efficiency: no difference in yield on Mn deficient soil after spraying

  12. Field trials for Mn efficiency • Trials have so far used the following design:

  13. Gistrup, 2004

  14. Vrå, 2004 (no Mn deficiency?)

  15. Improving paired plot designs Zinc sprayed and unsprayed plots of barley, sown side by side. 1998, Horsham, Australia.

  16. Conclusions • Identification of Mn inefficiency in Antonia • And probable Mn efficiency in Vanessa and Carola • Further study needed on the differences between Carola, Vanessa and Antonia • We must improve field trials for Mn efficiency.
