  2. Where Are We Now? What is democracy’s promise? Equality? Opportunity? Access? Informed and engaged citizenry? Obligations, responsibilities, and rewards?

  3. What Are We Doing Well? Access to higher education Engaged youth Opportunities of technology Examples of progress

  4. What Obstacles Do We Face? Growing gap between well-educated and under-educated Limited access to thoughtful information about key issues Economic pressures on free press (extremism and entertainment) Limiting resources ($, time) Societal focus on material over relationships

  5. What Shall We Do… Going Forward? Improve civic education and civil discourse Reprioritize public investment in education Transcend national and cultural identity

  7. Where Are We Now? Houston, we have a problem! Problems and issues are framework for developing strategies to increase personal and community awareness of need for social and civic responsibility Recognition of the need for improvement There are pocket of excellence over all sectors

  8. What Are We Doing Well? Ethical improvement programs, particularly with the professions Renewed emphasis on civic and social responsibility within education The Obama Factor Increased dialogue within both public and private sectors including education We’re doing ok but not great

  9. What Obstacles Do We Face? Lack of resources Lack of buy-in by employees Negative societal influences- media, family unit breakdowns, celebrity “icons” Lack of loyalty and engagement-move from job to job Focus on self vs. corporation/community Lack of formality

  10. What Shall We Do… Going Forward? Need for social compacts in the community to develop strategies Closer bonds and partnerships within the liberal arts Need for greater accountability for faculty and administrators- assess and reward what you value Educate, lead, and most importantly, live the example

  13. Where Are We Now? We have more questions than answers. We acknowledge there are historical problems and structures that keep us divided. But there is a sense of something shifting. We are grappling with change. Comfort zones are being pushed.

  14. What Are We Doing Well? We are willing to dialog are forward-looking believe in redemption acknowledge shared responsibility across business, government and education

  15. What Obstacles Do We Face? Economy Technology Human nature Tendency to categorize and group Current educational structure / funnel

  16. What Shall We Do… Going Forward? Create intentional experiential activities. Need to force conversation in workplace and classroom. Take ownership of creating models and tools needed . Connect students to local, state and national issues. Provide individuals with access to information that empowers them to challenge status quo.
