  4. Safety! • Get to know your kids’ friends and family. • Talk to your kids about appropriate behavior • No gang talk • No tattoos • No graffitti • Watch for behavior changes in dressing, grades, attitude, and friends • Hang out with your kids. • Make sure a responsible adult is home.

  5. Summer Time • June 9-August 26 • Keep up skills • Learn new things • Explore new ideas not covered in classes • Limit “screen time” to 1 hour a day

  6. Places to Go! • AV Symington Teen CenterThe A. V. Symington Teen Center at Rust Library is a place designed for and by teens ages 12-18. With thousands of books, 24 computers, two gaming systems with wide-screen TVs, two Macs, and one self-checkout machine, the Teen Center is a teen’s place to be creative, play games, hang out, study, and read. • Attend one of the numerous programs we host. • Earn community service hours by volunteering up to two hours each week. Shelve books, read to children, or perform a multitude of other duties that help keep the library in working order. • Use the Macs and the creative station computers to make and mashup images, video and music. • Ask a Teen Librarian for help with homework or your other information appetites.

At the Claude Moore Children’s Farm, your child can be a farmer for a day in the safety of an indoor interactive play area. Meet Milkie the Cow, collect eggs from the play chickens and ride the Kentucky Derby on Loudoun’s most famous horse, Genuine Risk. Step back in time at the Waxpool General Store to learn about life 100 years ago using authentic objects and records from the original store.

  11. Museums • The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport is the companion facility to the Museum on the National Mall. The museum provides enough space for the Smithsonian to display the thousands of aviation and space artifacts that cannot be exhibited on the National Mall.   12. Places to Go! • Historic White’s Ferry • In operation since 1786, White’s Ferry is the last working ferry on the Potomac River. A widely used means of crossing the river (and a shortcut) between Maryland and Virginia since its inception. Today, commuters use the ferry daily, where 24 vehicles can be transported at a time.   13. Downtown Leesburg • One of Virginia’s most vibrant and attractive communities, Leesburg was founded in 1758. Originally called George Town after the reigning monarch of Great Britain, the name was changed to Leesburg in honor Virginia’s influential Lee family. Hike over hills and through the woods to panoramic views of the Potomac and the distant blue foothills across the river on this 67 acre property.   16. Places to Go! • Great Falls Park At Great Falls, the Potomac River builds up speed and force as it falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and flows through the narrow Mather Gorge. The Patowmack Canal offers a glimpse into the early history of this country. Great Falls Park has many opportunities to explore history and nature, all in a beautiful 800-acre park only 15 miles from the Nation's Capital.

  17. Read! Write! Retain! • Read a book a week • Read a minimum of 30 minutes EACH DAY! • Read newspapers, magazines, book, etc… • Read to younger siblings • Write about books read or places visited
