Led by the research and education community since 1996, • promotes the missions of its members by providing both leading-edge network capabilities and unique partnership opportunities that together facilitate the development, deployment and use of revolutionary Internet technologies.

History of Internet2 • October 1, 1996 – Internet2 is launched • 1997- Inernet2 goes international when Canada joins, and cooperate when Cisco joins • 2000- Internet2 member achieve 831 Mbps of data from Redmond, Washington to Arlington, Virginia in under 82 seconds • 2006 – internet2 celebrates its 10 years with 200 U.S. universities ,70 leading corporations, 45 govt. agencies, 50 international partners.

Lehman, Chair, Internet2 Board of Trustees • This guy -> • Well over 200 universities with Oregon state University as a founding member • Corporate partners including: Microsoft, Sun, IBM, and Cisco • Corporate members such as: Comcast, Qwest, Verizon, Warner Bros.

Internet2 Middleware • “The intersection of stuff that network engineer don’t want to do with the stuff that application developers don’t want to do”. • Sets of tools and data that help applications use network resources and services. • Software layer between network and application layers providing services such as identification, authorization, directories, and security.

Core Middleware Services • Identifiers • a character string that connects a real world subject to a set of data. • Authentication • Establishing that a particular request is associated with a specific real-world subject. • Directories • Directory services consists of schema, namespace, and operations. • Authorization • What a real-world subject is permitted to do.

Future Make the network available to the public, thought no one is sure what this means Integrate the present internet into internet2 Rebuild / Retrofit the current internet around the architecture developed for the internet2 Bring down the partnership cost of being involved in the project so more novel companies can participate, contribute, and benefit
