  4. Guide to Using the Rubric The rubric is divided into sections. I have numbered them with their titles. Please be sure you know how I am grading you. Ask Questions! • Purpose: This is paragraph 1 in your essay. State the problem – what is the issue. What is your opinion and why is the other side incorrect. • Resources: The initial article you were given: read it, main idea, supporting facts, agree/disagree with 1-3 opinions. You have found a credible 2nd source (no wikipedia) and it supports your opinion on the issue. Read it, main idea, supporting facts. You have included the proper citations in the text and at the end of the essay. • Analysis and Evaluation: Paragraphs 2-4 in your essay. You are using data to support your view from both articles. Cite examples, remember to give credit to the author. Evaluate what you have read by adding your own ideas. • Conclusion: Paragraph 5 in your essay. Summarize your initial problem statement. Summarize why you choose your view and what supports it. Come up with a solution that you propose to solve to the issue based on what you have learned.

  5. Sample of Essay Section Submission John Smith Period 2 Paragraph 1: Every time you shop you are given a bag for your purchases. Different stores offer different types of bags ranging from regular plastic polyethylene bags to recycled plastic bags. The production of all of these bags requires energy and resources and contributes to environmental pollution. I believe that plastic bags create less waste then the recycled paper bags or compostable plastic bags. Manufacturing of plastic bags uses less water, less energy, and less oil than production of either compostable plastic or recycled paper bags. (Chaffee, et al. 2013) Paragraphs 2-4 use supporting details from your 2nd article to support why you think plastic bags are the better choice. Use in text citations. Paragraph 5: conclusion I believe that plastic bags create the least impact on the environment. The data from the study by Shimkets shows that 30% more energy was used to produce compostable plastic bags versus the regular plastic bags (2013, p. 104). Data from a study by the University of Connecticut showed that production of paper bags requires cutting down trees, thereby leading to an increase in global warming and an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. (Rothchild, 2013 p. 5) In my opinion, the best solution to the bag debate is to use the regular plastic bag, however I feel that bags should be used conservatively. This means that stores should assess whether or not a bag is really necessary when a customer makes a purchase. Customers should be savvy about the impacts of extra packaging on the environment and choose to use the regular plastic bag or carry out smaller items without using a bag at all.
