  1. Tools for Prewriting Techniques to assist in the brainstorming phase

  2. Free-writing • Write non-stop for 10 minutes about your topic. • Don’t worry if get side-tracked. • The important part of a free-write is just getting your ideas from your head to paper. • After the free-write, look for information that you can expand on.

  3. Clustering • Use a web to connect ideas to your main topic. • Place your main topic in the central circle. • Connect any related ideas to your topic.

  5. 5W’s & H • Answer the 5W’s & H for your topic. • Who? • What? • Where? • When? • Why? • How? Use your answers to help draft your essay.

  6. Cubing – consider your topic from 6 angles • 1. Describe it (colors, shapes, sizes, etc.) • 2. Compare it (What is it similar to?) • 3. Associate it (What does it make you think of?) • 4. Analyze it (Tell how it's made) • 5. Apply it (What can you do with it? How can it be used?) • 6. Argue for or against it
