British Council • is the UK's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations, creating international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries • has a global network of 191 offices in over 100 countries • specialist education teams in all regions of the world • has worked with HEIs in the UK and overseas, supporting their international work for over 70 years • reaches over 10,000 education policy makers and institutions across the world every year, plus 250 million students and alumni. www.britishcouncil.org

What we know about UK TNE provision • Since academic year 2007-08, it has been mandatory for UK institutions to report to HESA data on students studying the whole of their UK qualification outside of the UK. • Data on the following four fields are collected: • institution • country of activity • level of provision • type of activity • We now have 3 year’s worth of data with which some indication of trends can be gained, although any such analysis must be regarded with a little caution as institutions appear to have taken some time to adjust to reporting this activity outside of the UK.

  4. Top level summary • the number of students studying their entire UK qualification outside of the UK has increased 23% in the last year from 408,685 in 09-10 to 503,795 in 10-11. • UK qualifications are now delivered in over 200 countries and territories outside of the UK • There are now more than 70 countries where at least as many students study a UK HE qualification in that country compared to the number of students travelling to the UK for their education • There are 14 countries where the difference between students studying a UK qualification in country and those studying in the UK is greater than 5,000. British Council Transnational education (TNE) services • We have a track record and expertise in Transnational Education, first establishing a TNE Advisory Team in 2001 • TNE Services were developed and piloted in consultation with the HE sector through the Education UK Partnership • These are now a core service within British Council’s Services for International Education Marketing (SIEM) • Their aim is to help institutions build and develop effective TNE programmes • Services are supported by specialist TNE Managers in-country www.britishcouncil.org

British Council Transnational education (TNE) services • The British Council provides a range of services to help UK and international institutions build partnerships and recruit international students for UK TNE programmes delivered overseas. • The services for UK institutions are designed to help you plan which markets present the best opportunities for your courses and fall into 4 broad areas: • Marketing • Market Intelligence • Brokering • Support to local partners

Aim of British Council TNE services • Designed to help you plan which markets present the best opportunities for your courses • To offer TNE-focused market intelligence • to identify key partners in-country that meet your needs • to establish a clear route map through the local legal and regulatory QA frameworks • to meet students and parents interested in UK TNE programmes at seminars and exhibitions • to promote your courses directly to students through targeted web, print and marketing, and to gain local contacts, updates and support

British Council TNE Services include: • Country specific TNE Market Intelligence reports • Bespoke market intelligence • Support to find suitable partners • TNE zones at Exhibitions • Listing and profiling on the Education UK website and publications • Regular market updates • Bespoke consultancy and advice • Support for local partners

Accessing TNE Services and Support • TNE Services are part of British Council Services for International Education Marketing (SIEM) • They are available only to UK institutions (and their in-country partners) • Services are accessed through: • BC Account Managers based in the UK (each institution has a named AM) • SIEM teams based in overseas regions and countries • University International Offices will have these contacts • or email general.enquiries@britishcouncil.org

  13. TNE services are part of the wider portfolio supporting HEIs: • expertise and support for building international partnerships • establishing and initiating major partnership programmes for the UK (UKIERI, UK-China, BRIDGE, UK-US, UK-Pakistan, etc) • access for the UK sector to overseas ministries and HE policy makers through missions, inward visits and policy dialogues around the globe, including the Going Global conference  • wider market intelligence on global and country education markets • Services for International Education Marketing (SIEM) to support UK institutions (incl Exhibitions, direct marketing, consultancy)   • promoting UK study opportunities to international students through the Education UK brand and Education UK web site • promoting and supporting UK student outward mobility (through Erasmus, Language Assistants, IASTE and other programmes) www.britishcouncil.org
